Gil Magallanes Jr is a retired 48 year old MSG with 21 years active duty service as a Green Beret in the US Army. Gil served in both the Gulf War & OEF in Afghanistan. On December 5, 2001 Gil was injured by friendly fire when a 2000 pound bomb was mistakenly dropped on the position of his team. He sustained multiple injuries including an open TBI with loss of his skull & brain matter leaving him with permanent brain damage, cognitive, seizure and migraine disorders; vision impairment with left field blindness; closed C1/C2 & L5 fractures (neck & back), multiple organ trauma & the loss of 2 fingers & part of his left hand with nerve damage.Gil is currently in Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Failure (eventually requiring a kidney transplant) but he still loves a challenge & a good bike ride.
In October Gil will team up with a volunteer pilot, Dave who will act as his “eyes” while riding a tandem on this 620 mile bike ride; due to Gil’s vision impairment & the instability caused by the TBI he is not able to participate alone. The role of a pilot/captain is very serious as they must take full responsibility for the person they are piloting. They give so much of themselves by helping others achieve goals they wouldn’t otherwise be able to achieve. Dave proved he can fully handle this position last year. Gil spent 10 months in the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, CA where Dave volunteers as a tandem pilot for the WBRC taking blinded Veterans on tandem rides every week. Dave also piloted Gil for the NorCal/SoCal Back to Back Century Rides & in October when he guided Gil on day 2 of the 2011 MDC from Santa Cruz to Big Sur, CA.
