Bob “Sully” Sullivan: From Radio Personality to Champion of Adaptive Sports

Mariah Wyckoff

Bob “Sully” Sullivan is a San Diego native whose vibrant personality fills every room he enters. Known as an Emmy-nominated radio and TV personality, venture capitalist, keynote speaker, and musician, Sully’s influence extends far beyond entertainment. For over a decade, he has dedicated his energy to inspiring fitness and philanthropy, particularly through his work with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).

From Radio Waves to Cycling Roads: Sully’s Transformational Journey

Sully’s life took a transformative turn in 2010 when he embarked on the Million Dollar Challenge (MDC), an annual fundraising bike ride supporting CAF’s mission to provide athletes with physical disabilities access to adaptive sports equipment, training, and mentorship. The ride spans 620 miles from San Francisco to San Diego, attracting cyclists passionate about making a difference.

During the 2010 ride, Sully arranged a live interview with MDC Chairman Dean Roeper and Ride Doctor Jeff Anthony for his national radio program, The Big Biz Show, broadcast on the American Forces Radio Network. On Day 3, from a roadside in Big Sur, they discussed how CAF uses cycling to empower athletes with disabilities. At that time, Sully candidly recalls, he was “one more taco shy of 400 pounds.” That conversation sparked a newfound dedication to health and fitness.

Cycling for Change: Physical and Emotional Transformation

Following the ride, Sully swapped spin classes for road cycling, quickly noticing improvements in both body and mind. By the fall of 2011, he had trained hundreds of miles and raised thousands of dollars preparing for his first Million Dollar Challenge ride as a participant.

Yet it wasn’t just the physical challenge that impacted Sully. Riding alongside athletes like Ricky James, a motocross rider turned CAF athlete, he experienced firsthand the inspiring stories and daily struggles of people living with physical disabilities. Climbing the same hills together, Sully was deeply moved, creating a bond that hooked him as a lifelong supporter.

Becoming a Leader and Mentor in the CAF Cycling Community

By 2013, Sully rode alongside Ricky James as his ride leader. The following year, Sully officially became a group leader, guiding a group of cyclists who preferred a leisurely pace, enjoying the breathtaking California coast and camaraderie. Beyond being a participant, Sully evolved into a mentor and motivator, helping others find joy in the ride and support CAF’s mission.

Reflecting on his journey, Sully shares:

“At the very start of my introduction to CAF, I could see the incredible impact the organization has through sport for people with physical challenges. It was a no-brainer to support such a meaningful cause that affects so many lives, including those close to me.”

Giving Back Beyond the Ride: Music and Media Amplify the Cause

Sully’s passion for CAF extends beyond cycling. When not on the road or in the studio, he performs with The Sully Band at local San Diego venues like Belly Up and House of Blues. These performances often double as fundraisers to support CAF athletes and programs.

Moreover, Sully’s media company, Sully Entertainment Group, has been an invaluable media partner for CAF over the past decade. Through direct donations, broadcast interviews, and widespread promotion, Sully has helped CAF reach millions. Last year, CAF honored Sully Entertainment Group as Media Partner of the Year for their dedication and expertise in producing compelling video content that tells athletes’ stories with authenticity and heart.

In 2021, Sully Entertainment Group launched Loft 100 Studios, a state-of-the-art production hub focused on creating content for CAF, including live-streaming virtual events and producing the Heroes of Sport podcast series. This innovative effort amplifies the voices of athletes and supporters, expanding CAF’s reach like never before.

The Million Dollar Challenge: Join Sully in Riding for a Life Without Limits

As the Million Dollar Challenge approaches its 15th anniversary, Sully remains a passionate ambassador and ride leader. The annual event brings together cyclists, CAF athletes, and supporters for a shared mission: to empower individuals with physical disabilities worldwide.

Through adaptive sports equipment grants, coaching, training, and competition support, CAF helps athletes unleash their potential and experience the life-changing power of sport. Sully invites everyone to be part of this journey:
