Toyota and CAF: Driving Mobility and Opportunity Through the San Diego Triathlon Challenge

Mariah Wyckoff

For Toyota, mobility is about more than transportation. It’s about creating opportunities for people to move through the world with greater freedom, independence, and possibility. That vision comes to life through Toyota’s partnership with CAF and the San Diego Triathlon Challenge fueled by Toyota, where athletes of all abilities come together to experience the transformative power of sport. From supporting athlete grants and adaptive sports programming to creating inclusive experiences like the Toyota Sports Festival and Athlete Lounge, Toyota helps ensure that more individuals with physical disabilities have access to the equipment, resources, and community that make an active life possible. Together, Toyota and CAF are proving that when barriers are removed, opportunity can take athletes farther than they ever imagined.

More Than Movement: How Toyota and CAF Are Driving Opportunity Through Mobility

When Toyota talks about mobility, it isn’t simply referring to transportation.

Mobility is the freedom to move. The ability to participate. The opportunity to access experiences that connect us with our communities and help us pursue our goals.

It’s a philosophy that has guided Toyota’s evolution into a mobility company, investing in innovations that help people navigate the world with greater independence and possibility. From adaptive vehicle technologies and accessible transportation solutions to the development of Toyota Woven City, a living laboratory designed to explore the future of mobility for people of all abilities, Toyota continues to challenge traditional ideas of what movement can mean.

That same belief sits at the heart of the partnership between Toyota and the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

Together, Toyota and CAF share a commitment to ensuring that physical disabilities never define what is possible. Through adaptive sports, athlete grants, and inclusive events, they are helping create pathways to participation, connection, and achievement for individuals around the world.

Nowhere is that partnership more visible than at the San Diego Triathlon Challenge fueled by Toyota.

The Event That Started It All

For more than 30 years, the San Diego Triathlon Challenge fueled by Toyota has served as the heartbeat of CAF’s mission.

What began as a grassroots event on the shores of La Jolla has grown into one of the nation’s most impactful celebrations of adaptive sport. Every year, thousands of athletes, supporters, volunteers, donors, and partners come together to demonstrate what becomes possible when barriers are removed and opportunities are created.

The event is more than a triathlon.

It is a living example of inclusion in action.

Athletes using prosthetics, handcycles, racing wheelchairs, adaptive surfboards, and other adaptive equipment line up side by side, proving that sport becomes more powerful when everyone has a place at the starting line.

For Toyota, supporting SDTC reflects its belief that mobility should be available to everyone.

For CAF, the event creates a platform where mobility is not an abstract concept. It becomes something athletes can experience firsthand.

Mobility Creates Opportunity

Every athlete has a different story.

For some, mobility means receiving an adaptive bike that allows them to ride alongside friends and family for the first time.

For others, it means training for a marathon after a life-changing injury, learning to surf, competing in a triathlon, or pursuing Paralympic dreams.

These opportunities often begin with access.

Through CAF grants, athletes receive adaptive sports equipment, coaching, competition expenses, travel support, and training opportunities that can fundamentally change the trajectory of their lives.

That is why the funds raised through SDTC matter so much.

The impact doesn’t end when athletes cross the finish line.

It extends into future races, future adventures, future friendships, and future opportunities that would not otherwise exist.

The mobility created through sport often sparks a lifetime of possibility.

Bringing Mobility to Life at SDTC

Toyota’s presence at SDTC goes far beyond sponsorship.

Over the years, the company has helped create experiences that showcase the power of adaptive sport while highlighting its commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

At SDTC, attendees can experience the Toyota Sports Festival, which features adaptive sports such as wheelchair basketball, sled hockey, sitting volleyball, and curling. Toyota has also supported athlete grant presentations, adaptive sports demonstrations, and opportunities for community members to connect with Team Toyota Paralympians and CAF athletes.

Toyota has also brought mobility innovations directly into the community through initiatives like adaptive vehicle demonstrations and accessible transportation experiences. During CAF and community events, Toyota has showcased adapted vehicles equipped with hand controls and accessibility features designed to help people of varying abilities navigate daily life with greater independence.

These experiences help bring a larger vision to life. Because mobility is not only about how we travel.

It is about how we participate.

Beyond Race Day

One of the most powerful aspects of the Toyota and CAF partnership is its lasting impact.

An adaptive sports grant awarded during SDTC may benefit an athlete for years.

A child who receives their first adaptive bicycle may discover a lifelong passion for cycling.

A veteran who gains access to adaptive sports may find renewed purpose and community.

A young athlete who attends an inclusive clinic may gain the confidence to pursue goals they never imagined possible.

The ripple effect is impossible to measure fully. What starts as a single opportunity often grows into a lifetime of experiences. That is the power of mobility. And that is why Toyota’s partnership with CAF extends beyond one weekend each year.

Looking Ahead

As the San Diego Triathlon Challenge fueled by Toyota approaches once again, it represents more than a fundraising event.

It represents a shared belief that opportunity should never be limited by circumstance.

Through Toyota’s commitment to mobility and CAF’s commitment to access through sport, thousands of athletes have been able to pursue goals, build community, and experience the freedom that movement can provide.

Every dollar raised. Every mile completed. Every volunteer who gives their time.

It all helps create opportunities that will continue changing lives long after the event is over.

Because mobility is about more than getting from one place to another.

It’s about creating a future where everyone has the chance to move forward.
