CAF SoCal Adaptive Golf Clinic in San Diego Builds Access and Community Through Sport

Mariah Wyckoff

On a sunny day in Mission Bay, more than 15 athletes with physical disabilities came together for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) SoCal Adaptive Golf Clinic—a day centered on access, connection, and the opportunity to experience sport in a new way.

From youth participants picking up a golf club for the very first time to experienced athletes refining their skills, the clinic created a welcoming space where every swing represented progress, confidence, and possibility.

A Growing Community in Motion

This marked the second adaptive golf clinic hosted in Mission Bay, continuing to build momentum for adaptive sport opportunities across Southern California.

Athletes with a range of physical disabilities participated, including individuals with limb differences, athletes using assistive devices, and those with visual impairments. Each athlete arrived with their own goals, experiences, and reasons for showing up—and left as part of a stronger, more connected community.

Support from the City of San Diego helped make the day possible, reinforcing a shared commitment to expanding access to sport at the local level.

Learning, Leading, and Lifting Each Other Up

A team of experienced coaches from the U.S. Adaptive Golf Alliance (USAGA) guided athletes throughout the clinic, offering instruction tailored to each individual’s needs and abilities.

Whether it was learning the fundamentals of grip and stance or refining technique, athletes were supported every step of the way. The environment encouraged growth without pressure—where progress was measured not by perfection, but by participation.

Coaches and participants alike contributed to an atmosphere rooted in encouragement, adaptability, and shared understanding.

More Than a Clinic

For many athletes, the clinic was about more than golf. It was about discovering new possibilities.

For first-time participants, it opened the door to a sport they may not have previously thought accessible. For returning athletes, it provided a chance to continue building skills and reconnect with a community that understands their journey.

Moments like these are where confidence grows, independence is strengthened, and new goals begin to take shape.

Expanding What is Possible

Clinics like this play a critical role in CAF’s mission to remove barriers and create opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities.

By providing access to expert coaching, adaptive techniques, and inclusive environments, CAF continues to ensure that more athletes have the chance to experience the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of sport.

As the SoCal adaptive golf community continues to grow, so does the impact—one athlete, one swing, and one opportunity at a time.
