CAF-Idaho Climbing Camp 2023: Three Days of Crimps, Courage, and Community at City of Rocks

CAF Staff

With epic climbs, starry nights, and plenty of s’mores, the third annual CAF-Idaho Climbing Camp brought together adaptive athletes for an unforgettable weekend in one of the country’s most iconic climbing destinations. Set against the dramatic granite peaks of City of Rocks, this three-day camp gave participants a chance to challenge themselves on the wall, connect with peers, and learn from some of the most respected names in adaptive climbing.

Reaching New Heights—Together

Twelve adaptive athletes spent the weekend immersed in all things climbing—from learning how to tie knots and build anchors to scaling vertical pitches and exploring new movement on rock. With expert coaches by their side, they bouldered, belayed, smeared, and problem-solved their way through routes designed for all levels and abilities.

CAF ensured that each climber was properly outfitted with custom-fitted gear and supported from the moment they arrived at camp.

World-Class Mentorship on the Wall

Athletes were coached and inspired by five experienced instructors, including Para Climbing pioneer Mark Wellman and National Champion Para Climber Ronnie Dickson, who brought years of adaptive climbing expertise and motivational energy to the experience.

The weekend kicked off with an opening fireside chat led by Wellman, where he shared stories of his own climbing journey and the power of perseverance. The atmosphere was equal parts educational and empowering—with plenty of laughs, encouragement, and teamwork in between.

Campfire Camaraderie and Unplugged Moments

When they weren’t climbing, athletes bonded over games, shared meals, and of course, s’mores under the stars. The natural beauty of City of Rocks provided the perfect backdrop for reflection and connection, reinforcing CAF’s commitment to community as much as sport.
