CAF-Idaho Fly Fishing Basecamp 2024: Casting Confidence and Building Community on Idaho’s Waters

CAF Staff

From the calm banks of the Boise River to the majestic waters of the Snake and Henry’s Fork, the 2024 CAF-Idaho Fly Fishing Basecamp gave six adaptive athletes the chance to immerse themselves in the art of fly fishing—and in the joy of the outdoors. Part skills clinic, part soulful retreat, this unique program blended hands-on instruction, accessible adventure, and community connection.

Education, Adventure, and a Whole Lot of Casting

Led by experienced adaptive fishing coaches and supported by an all-star crew of guides, the Basecamp introduced both seasoned and first-time anglers to everything from ichthyology (the study of fish) to casting from shore, fly tying, and even adaptive rowing. Participants gained not only technical skill but a deeper understanding of the ecosystem they were a part of.

And because it’s CAF, the water-based fun didn’t stop at fishing—athletes also got to enjoy rafting and wake surfing, building confidence and camaraderie along the way.

A Dream Destination Finale

The program culminated in a 4-day immersive adventure on the South Fork of the Snake River and Henry’s Fork near Island Park, surrounded by breathtaking Idaho wilderness. There, athletes put their new skills to the test with personalized guidance from expert fly fishing guides and the support of their teammates—celebrating how far they’d come from their first cast.

Personalized Coaching on Every Cast

What set this program apart was the ratio of guides to athletes—ensuring every participant received hands-on coaching, adapted instruction, and meaningful mentorship from start to finish. The all-star crew included:

  • 2 dedicated adaptive fishing coaches
  • 9 Idaho Angler guides
  • 4 Cascade Raft & Kayak guides
  • 4 Three Rivers Ranch fly fishing pros
  • 1 Fish & Game fisheries biologist

This depth of knowledge made for a rich experience in technique, safety, and local conservation practices.

More Than a Fishing Trip

CAF-Idaho’s Fly Fishing Basecamp was about much more than learning to tie a fly or cast a line—it was about building resilience, trying something new, and celebrating what’s possible when outdoor spaces are made more accessible.
