A Milestone for Inclusion and Family Fun

In a powerful display of inclusion, community, and athletic spirit, hundreds of children of all abilities gathered at LEGOLAND® California Resort for the first-ever inclusive Kids Marathon Mile, held on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Hosted in partnership with Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), Merlin’s Magic Wand Foundation, and In Motion Events, the event welcomed kids with and without physical disabilities to run, roll, and stroll through the park before it opened to the public.

This inaugural event marked a meaningful step forward in adaptive sports for kids, aligning with CAF’s 30-year mission of empowering individuals with physical disabilities through sport. The Kids Marathon Mile was part of the Carlsbad Marathon race weekend and introduced a new adaptive wave start—ensuring every participant had the chance to take part in the magic.

Creating Magical Memories at LEGOLAND

Through a partnership with Merlin’s Magic Wand Foundation, families received exclusive early access to LEGOLAND® California, creating a unique and joyful race-day experience for all participants.

“Merlin’s Magic Wand Foundation provides magical experiences for children all over the world who are facing adversity,” said Julie Estrada, spokesperson for Merlin Entertainments. “We are proud to offer a Magical Day Out to CAF families so they can enjoy all that LEGOLAND California Resort has to offer and build cherished memories they’ll never forget.”

Kids navigated the one-mile course surrounded by LEGO® models and colorful landmarks, with high-energy volunteers and supporters cheering them on every step of the way.

From Young Runner to Paralympic Champion

The event was kicked off with an inspiring message from CAF Ambassador Rudy Garcia-Tolson, who knows firsthand how transformative sport can be. Rudy got his start in competitive running at this very event when it was known as the Carlsbad Kids Marathon Mile. Now 35, he’s a five-time Paralympic medalist and the first bilateral above-knee amputee to complete an IRONMAN triathlon.

“Rudy’s journey from the Kids Marathon Mile to the Paralympic podium is a powerful reminder of what’s possible,” said Bob Babbitt, CAF co-founder. “His perseverance and commitment continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.”

In addition to Rudy, more than 20 children with physical disabilities participated—running on prosthetics or using racing wheelchairs—alongside hundreds of their peers in a non-competitive, family-friendly fun run designed to promote healthy living and active lifestyles.

A New Era of Inclusive Community Events

“The finish line represents more than just the completion of a race—it symbolizes inclusion, determination, and shared celebration,” said Christine Adams, CEO of In Motion Events. “This first event of 2024 sets a strong tone for the year ahead. We’re proud to partner with CAF to continue creating spaces where all kids can feel welcome and supported.”

Since 1994, the Challenged Athletes Foundation has helped over 44,000 athletes in 73 countries by providing access to equipment, training, and mentorship. With more than $159 million raised, CAF is committed to ensuring that athletes with physical disabilities never have to sit on the sidelines.
