On a summer day in July 2022, Parker Byrd’s life changed forever. The highly recruited baseball player was looking forward to his freshman year at East Carolina University, ready to take the next big step toward his dream of competing in Division 1 baseball.
But during a tubing accident, Parker lost his right leg below the knee, an event that could have ended his athletic aspirations. Instead, it sparked a journey of resilience, determination, and groundbreaking ambition—to become the first athlete with a prosthetic leg to play Division 1 baseball.
Baseball had always been Parker’s world. Known for his athleticism and competitive spirit, he had earned a spot on ECU’s roster and was poised to make an immediate impact. The tubing accident left him with not only the physical challenge of losing a limb but also the mental battle of questioning whether his lifelong dream was still possible.
With support from his family, coaches, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), Parker refused to let his circumstances define him.
Shortly after his accident, Parker connected with CAF and Össur, a leader in prosthetic technology. Through this partnership, he received a high-performance prosthetic leg designed to help him return to the baseball field.
“Losing my leg was never going to mean losing baseball,” Parker says. “I want to prove—to myself and to every kid facing challenges—that dreams don’t stop because of adversity.”
With intense training and a relentless mindset, Parker has been working to adapt his game to new mechanics—perfecting his swing, fielding drills, and running technique with a prosthetic.

To celebrate Parker’s journey and inspire the community that rallied behind him, CAF co-founder Bob Babbitt took a unique approach during Super Bowl Sunday 2024. Instead of purchasing a multi-million-dollar national spot, Bob invested $500 in a one-market, 60-second commercial that aired in Greenville, North Carolina—home to Parker and ECU.
Produced by Eric Cochran of Taikuli Productions, the ad showcased Parker’s resilience and determination, highlighting his goal of making Division 1 history.
“Parker Byrd’s journey embodies the spirit of resilience that defines CAF,” said Bob Babbitt. “By sharing his story during the big game in Greenville, we hope to inspire the local community and beyond, proving that challenges can be overcome with determination and support.”
This wasn’t the first time Bob Babbitt and Eric Cochran used a big game commercial to highlight challenged athletes. In 2022, they ran a spot in Cooperstown, New York—home of the MLB Hall of Fame—for the film Landis: Just Watch Me, chronicling the journey of quadruple amputee baseball player Landis Sims.
Like Landis, Parker is rewriting what’s possible for adaptive athletes in baseball. His story adds a new chapter to the history of inclusion and perseverance in sports.
Parker’s ultimate goal is clear: to take the field as a Division 1 baseball player. Every day he trains, Parker moves closer to that milestone—not just for himself, but for every athlete with a physical challenge who dares to dream big.
CAF is proud to stand beside Parker, providing the resources, mentorship, and community that help turn obstacles into opportunities.
Your support helps athletes like Parker push past limits, rewrite what’s possible, and inspire the next generation of challenged athletes. Together, we can make history—on and off the field. =
