Scout Bassett: From Orphanage to Paralympic Champion

CAF Staff

Many know Scout Bassett for her speed on the track, her world championship medals, and her electrifying presence as a Paralympian. But beyond the podiums and records lies a story of extraordinary resilience, faith, and the transformative power of adaptive sports.

Born in Nanjing, China, Scout lost her right leg in a chemical fire as a toddler. With no family able to care for her, she spent the first seven years of her life in a government orphanage, often marginalized and facing an uncertain future. At age seven, her life took a dramatic turn when she was adopted by an American family and brought to the United States—a journey that would ultimately set her on a path to becoming one of the world’s most recognized adaptive athletes.

Finding Her Place in Sports

Adjusting to life in a new country wasn’t easy. Scout explored a variety of sports—basketball, tennis, softball, and golf—trying to find where she belonged. Despite her determination, she often felt isolated and unsure of her future.

That changed in 2002 when, at just 13 years old, Scout received her first running prosthetic through a CAF Access for Athletes grant. The moment she ran for the first time was transformative.

“Running became a healing power in my life and transformed me from a painfully shy recluse to a young woman with confidence, passion, and drive,” Scout recalls. “That single piece of adaptive sports equipment changed the way I thought and lived.”

From that day forward, she made a vow to never again be ashamed of her story or her scars. Instead, she embraced them as a testament to her strength.

Rising to the Top

With access to the right equipment and support, Scout’s athletic career took off. She became a two-time World Championship bronze medalist in the 100 meters and long jump, competed as a sprinter in the 2016 Paralympic Games, and even ventured into triathlons. A graduate of UCLA, she has become a role model for young athletes with physical challenges across the globe.

But for Scout, the journey has always been about more than medals.

“I no longer wanted to merely exist—I found my calling in living to serve and help others fulfill their purpose,” she says.

A Life of Gratitude and Purpose

Scout attributes her success to two guiding forces: her faith and the incredible community surrounding her, particularly the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

“I’ve gotten to countless start lines because of CAF. They took me from nothing to something,” she explains. “If you’ve ever wondered whether your efforts make a difference, I can assure you they do—my story is possible because of you.”

On Thanksgiving, Scout reflects deeply on this journey, offering gratitude to her family, friends, mentors, coaches, and the CAF community who lifted her up during her hardest times.
