Growing Stronger Together: CAF & USA Triathlon Youth Paratriathlon Camp

Mariah Wyckoff

Article by Sammy Rhodes

This summer, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and USA Triathlon joined forces to create an unforgettable experience for young athletes like me who dream of pushing their limits in the sport of triathlon.

The 6th Annual CAF Youth Paratriathlon Camp, held in sunny Southern California, was more than just a training week. It was a journey of growth, friendship, and discovery that culminated in a mini triathlon on Fiesta Island—the birthplace of triathlon itself.

A One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

Our camp was hosted at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, an Olympic and Paralympic hub where elite competitors train year-round. For a young athlete like me, just arriving at this facility felt like stepping into the future of my sport.

I had some experience in swimming, cycling, and racing individually, but never combined them into a full triathlon setting. Walking into camp, I had no idea how much I would learn—or how much this week would change me.

From the start, the coaches made it clear: this camp wasn’t just about drills and endurance—it was about building confidence, having fun, and realizing that no dream is too big.

Training Like Champions

Each day brought a new challenge. We rotated between swimming sessions in the Olympic-sized pool, cycling drills, and running and racing chair training on the track. Every workout pushed us, but it was never just about speed—it was about technique, strategy, and learning how to transition between disciplines like seasoned triathletes.

A coach stands on the pool deck giving instructions to a group of youth athletes in swim caps and goggles, who are gathered in the water at swim practice.

In between sessions, we shared laughs, encouraged each other, and started forming bonds that felt like family. We weren’t just training; we were growing together as athletes and as people.

My Favorite Part

The highlight for me was watching every single camper step up and show their talent. Whether it was completing a tough swim set, nailing a bike course for the first time, or pushing past fears on the run, we all experienced breakthroughs.

Seeing my fellow athletes grow in skill and confidence reminded me why camps like this matter so much. It’s not just about medals or podiums—it’s about believing in yourself and finding joy in the journey.

The Big Finish: Mini Triathlon on Fiesta Island

After five days of hard work, it was time to put everything together. Our week concluded with a mini triathlon at Fiesta Island, the iconic birthplace of triathlon. Standing at the start line with my new friends, I felt both nervous and excited—but mostly proud of how far we had come.

Young athletes using racing wheelchairs and everyday wheelchairs gather on a track with coaches, preparing for training, with mountains in the background.

We swam, biked, and raced across the finish line, cheered on by coaches, families, and teammates. Completing that triathlon wasn’t just the end of camp—it was the start of a bigger dream for all of us.

Gratitude and Growth

Leaving camp, I felt like a new athlete. The guidance from coaches Travis, Chris, Deb, and mentor Bob Babbitt gave me tools I’ll carry into every future race. More importantly, I left with lifelong friendships and the confidence to dream bigger.

To CAF, USA Triathlon, and everyone who made this week possible—thank you. Because of you, I know I’m a stronger person and athlete. And I can’t wait to see my camp friends at future races, pushing boundaries and chasing finish lines together.
