For more than 20 youth athletes, August 8 was more than a day at the ballpark. It was an opportunity to learn from Major League coaches, build skills on a professional field, and experience firsthand what can happen when access and opportunity come together.
The 2026 CAF-Northeast Phillies Coaches Clinic powered by Toyota welcomed athletes with physical disabilities to Philadelphia’s iconic Citizens Bank Park for a one-of-a-kind baseball experience. Hosted in partnership with the Philadelphia Phillies and Toyota, the clinic gave participants the chance to step onto the same field as some of baseball’s biggest stars while receiving personalized instruction from members of the Phillies’ Major League coaching staff.
From fielding ground balls and tracking fly balls to stepping into the batter’s box and throwing from the bullpen, athletes spent the morning learning, competing, and creating memories that will last long after the final pitch.

Few youth baseball players get the opportunity to train on a Major League field. For clinic participants, that experience became reality as they rotated through a series of baseball drills led by Phillies coaches.
Athletes fielded balls across the outfield grass, sharpened their hitting skills inside the Phillies’ underground batting cages, and practiced pitching mechanics in the team’s bullpen. Throughout the day, coaches provided instruction, encouragement, and feedback tailored to each athlete’s experience level and goals.
The clinic wasn’t focused solely on performance. It was about creating an environment where athletes could challenge themselves, build confidence, and enjoy the game they love alongside peers who share similar experiences.
Events like the Phillies Coaches Clinic help remove barriers to participation while creating opportunities for youth athletes to continue growing in sport. Whether participants were stepping onto a professional field for the first time or returning as experienced players, every athlete had the chance to learn from the game at its highest level.

The excitement didn’t end when the clinic concluded.
Later that afternoon, participants and their families returned to Citizens Bank Park for the Phillies versus Blue Jays game, with complimentary tickets provided by Toyota and the Philadelphia Phillies. The game offered athletes an opportunity to celebrate the day’s accomplishments while enjoying an unforgettable Major League Baseball experience together.
For two CAF athletes, however, the game became a moment they will likely remember forever.

Thirteen-year-old Gavin Yonce had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the game.
And he didn’t disappoint.
Standing on the field in front of thousands of fans, Gavin fired a strike right over home plate, drawing cheers from the crowd and marking one of the biggest moments in his baseball journey.
A dedicated baseball player from the Richmond, Virginia area, Gavin was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma bone cancer in his right leg at age ten. Following his amputation, he remained committed to the sport he loves and returned to the field as soon as he was medically cleared. In his very first at-bat back, he recorded an RBI hit, setting the tone for the determination and passion that continue to define his athletic journey.
Today, Gavin plays second base for his travel baseball club and continues pursuing his goals on the diamond.
His memorable first pitch was only part of the experience.
Throughout the weekend, Gavin also connected with former Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, who was being inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame. The two spent time together before the game, warmed up for their back-to-back ceremonial pitches, and shared a special moment that highlighted the impact sports heroes can have on the next generation of athletes.
To commemorate the occasion, Gavin received a custom Phillies jersey signed by Utley and joined him during a celebratory Toyota truck ride around the ballpark before first pitch, greeting fans and soaking in the experience.

Later in the game, another CAF athlete received special recognition.
Sixteen-year-old Logan Marmino was honored as the Phillies Hometown Hero, a distinction that celebrates individuals making an impact both on and off the field.
Logan’s story reflects a passion for sport that extends far beyond baseball. A high school baseball player and national-level sled hockey athlete, he has become a leader, advocate, and mentor for other young people with limb differences.
Many know Logan from the Apple TV+ series Best Foot Forward, but his impact reaches well beyond television. He has used his platform to advocate for increased access to adaptive sports opportunities, including supporting the So Everybody Can Move legislative effort in New Jersey.
During the game, Logan was recognized on the field in front of Phillies fans and received a custom engraved bat, honoring both his athletic achievements and his commitment to helping others.
His motto, “No Limits,” continues to inspire the way he approaches athletics, advocacy, and community.

The success of the 2026 CAF Northeast Phillies Coaches Clinic Powered by Toyota was made possible through the collaboration of organizations committed to expanding opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities.
Together, CAF, Toyota, and the Philadelphia Phillies created an experience that combined elite instruction, meaningful access, and unforgettable moments. For the athletes who participated, the clinic provided more than baseball drills. It offered a chance to learn, connect, and see what’s possible when the right support systems are in place.
From taking swings in a Major League batting cage to receiving recognition in front of thousands of fans, athletes walked away with memories that reinforced an important message: they belong in sport.
As CAF continues working alongside partners across the country, clinics like this one help create pathways that allow athletes to pursue their goals, strengthen their communities, and experience the joy of play at every level.
