Building Skills, Confidence, and Community on the Ice

Mariah Wyckoff

The ice was full of movement, focus, and connection as 21 youth athletes came together for a sled hockey clinic in partnership with the New Jersey Devils Youth Foundation. From the first push across the ice to the final moments of gameplay, the day reflected what access to sport can create when opportunity meets community.

Athletes of all experience levels took part in a session designed to build both foundational skills and confidence. For some, it was a chance to refine technique. For others, it was an introduction to the sport. For every athlete, it was an opportunity to be part of something bigger.

Developing the Fundamentals

The clinic focused on the core elements of sled hockey, giving athletes the tools to grow their skills in a supportive and structured environment. Through a series of engaging drills, participants worked on skating, puck control, passing, shooting, and game awareness.

Each drill was designed with intention, allowing athletes to build confidence step by step. Coaches and volunteers created space for learning, encouraging athletes to challenge themselves while celebrating progress along the way.

The session concluded with a small-area scrimmage, where athletes brought everything together. The energy shifted as skills turned into gameplay, with quick passes, strategic movement, and moments of teamwork unfolding across the ice. It was a chance to apply what they had learned and experience the pace and excitement of the game.

More Than a Clinic

While skill development was a key focus, what stood out most was the environment. The ice became a place where athletes supported one another, celebrated each other’s progress, and built connections that extended beyond the session.

There was encouragement after every attempt, shared excitement after each goal, and a sense of belonging that carried throughout the day. These moments are what define the impact of programs like this. They are not just about learning a sport. They are about creating access, fostering growth, and building confidence that extends far beyond the rink.

For many athletes with physical disabilities, opportunities like this are not always easy to find. Equipment, coaching, and access can be barriers. Clinics like this one help remove those barriers, opening the door for athletes to explore what is possible.

Power in Motion

Every push across the ice told a story of progress. Every pass and shot reflected effort, learning, and determination. Together, these moments showed what happens when a community comes together to create opportunity.

This is what Power in Motion looks like in action. It is not just about movement on the ice. It is about forward momentum in confidence, skill, and connection.

A Partnership That Expands Access

This clinic was made possible through the partnership with the New Jersey Devils Youth Foundation, whose commitment to making the game more inclusive continues to create meaningful opportunities for young athletes.

Their support helps ensure that more athletes have access to programs, equipment, and experiences that allow them to participate fully in sport. It is through partnerships like this that access continues to grow, and more athletes can take part in moments like these.

Looking Ahead

As the session came to a close, the impact was clear. Athletes left the ice with new skills, stronger confidence, and a deeper connection to the sport and each other.

Days like this are a reminder that when access is created, potential follows. The next generation of athletes is already in motion, building skills, forming community, and discovering what is possible.

Together, we move.
