Roxana Dobrica’s Journey: From Tragedy to Triumph on Three Wheels

CAF Staff

This article was adapted from a piece originally written by Roxana, reflecting on her story and time in California.

Italian resident, model, and passionate handcyclist Roxana Dobrica spent three months in San Diego training, connecting, and redefining her future. In her own words, Roxana shares how her journey from trauma to triumph brought her to the Challenged Athletes Foundation and a community that forever changed her life.

A Life Forever Changed

Eight years ago, shortly after moving from Romania to Italy for a better future, Roxana’s world was turned upside down by a devastating car accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

“I spent seven years not accepting that I was in a wheelchair,” Roxana recalls. “I stayed indoors, relying on others, wishing for a miracle. I wasn’t living—my mind wouldn’t move past the barrier.”

Finally, a breaking point came:

“About a year ago, I couldn’t stand my situation anymore. I decided to take my life into my own hands and find purpose.”

Hospitalized again—this time with a new mindset—Roxana opened herself to change. She connected with other individuals with disabilities and witnessed firsthand how sport could transform a life.

Discovering Handcycling and a New Identity

Through a group of handcyclists in Brescia, Italy, Roxana found not just a sport but a community that embraced her. Joining Active Sport Brescia, she competed in every stage of the Tour of Italy and, remarkably, won her category in her first competitive year.

During this time, she also began modeling, joining the Iulia Barton Inclusive Agency and gracing the runway at Milan Fashion Week.

San Diego: Training, Connection, and Family

Roxana had long dreamed of visiting San Diego, and in 2018, that dream became reality. Planning a warm-weather training trip during Italy’s winter, she connected with CAF supporter Brian Enge through Bicycle Mobile Works. The Enge family opened their home and hearts, welcoming her as family.

With introductions to CAF staff and local athletes, Roxana quickly became part of the CAF community. Guided by David Lee and challenged by Steven Peace, she conquered iconic coastal routes, including the hills of Torrey Pines, building strength and confidence.

Her dedication paid off when she completed her first century ride—the Tour de Palm Springs—alongside Lance Weir and Team Chase.

“The ocean air fed my strength to pedal,” Roxana says. “Finishing that ride showed me that nothing is out of reach.”

More Than Just a Visit

While in Southern California, Roxana experienced a level of accessibility and inclusion that felt life-changing. From Los Angeles to San Diego, every location and experience was wheelchair-friendly.

She formed lifelong bonds with athletes and supporters who showed her that she belonged.

“For a person with a disability, living in California is ideal. I met amazing people who made me feel at home, loved, and included. I’ll never forget it.”

Giving Back and Looking Ahead

Now back in Italy, Roxana rides with her team, mentors newly injured individuals, and speaks in schools about disability awareness and bicycle safety. She frequently visits Romania to see her son and works toward her ultimate athletic goal: competing in the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

“We aren’t just athletes—we’re humans, and it’s our duty to help those in need. I may be stubborn, but I’ll never give up on this dream.”
