One Step at a Time: How Tara Butcher Found Strength Through Sport

CAF Staff

After surviving a near-fatal accident, Tara Butcher rebuilt her life through movement, mindset, and a deep connection to nature. With support from the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), she discovered her inner athlete—climbing mountains, finishing marathons, and practicing yoga with intention and joy. Her journey has inspired others, including her own brother, and continues to show what’s possible when perseverance meets community.

From Recovery to Resilience

In 2005, Tara’s life changed in an instant. While driving home on a San Diego freeway, she was involved in a minor accident. As she stood outside her car, she was struck by another vehicle going 72 miles per hour, launching her across two lanes of traffic.

She spent 10 days in a coma. A metal rod was inserted into her right leg, and her left leg was amputated below the knee. Her injuries were extensive—including a neck nearly severed from her spine.

But Tara survived. And in the years that followed, she began to thrive.

Discovering the Athlete Within

Before the accident, Tara never saw herself as an athlete. “I was the dancer and singer in the family,” she says. But after receiving a CAF grant for a running prosthetic in 2007, a new part of her identity emerged.

That grant changed everything. She went on to run the New York City Marathon, climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, become a dedicated yogi, and even win the women’s division of the Empire State Building Run-Up.

“CAF helped me discover a version of myself I didn’t know existed,” she says. “I found strength, confidence, and an entirely new community.”

The Summit That Sparked Her Soul

Why Mt. Whitney?

One of Tara’s biggest athletic goals was to summit Mt. Whitney—the tallest peak in the continental U.S. at 14,505 feet. The idea first took hold after hearing a friend talk about the climb. Years later, when a friend secured a permit, Tara jumped at the chance to join.

“I had just turned 35 and decided it was time to start checking things off my bucket list,” she says.

Tara and her small crew planned a one-day, 22-mile round-trip hike via the classic Mt. Whitney Trail.

Training for the Climb

Tara trained for months—balancing weekday spin sessions, runs, and yoga with weekend hikes ranging from 8 to 14 miles. Hiking poles became a must-have tool for balance, especially with her prosthetic.

“I love being in nature. There’s something powerful about waking up before sunrise and starting a long hike with friends who make it fun—even when it’s hard.”

The camaraderie was just as important as the physical training. “My hiking companions made six-hour hikes feel like two. We kept each other going with laughter and encouragement.”

A Journey That Inspires Others

Lifting Her Brother

Tara’s impact didn’t stop with her own transformation. In 2012, her older brother Brandon suffered a traumatic injury at work that ultimately led to the amputation of his leg. As the only person he knew living with limb loss, Tara became his guide and support system.

“It was hard stepping into a mentor role as his younger sister,” she said, “but I wanted to show him that life after amputation could still be full of adventure, strength, and movement.”

She helped him navigate his recovery and introduced him to the CAF community. Years later, the two would take on the Empire State Building Run-Up together—climbing 1,576 stairs side-by-side in a celebration of resilience and sibling strength.

Their story is a powerful reminder of the ripple effect of healing—and how one person’s courage can open doors for others.

Purpose, Passion, and Paying It Forward

Outside of athletics, Tara has worked as a hairdresser in La Jolla, CA for over 14 years. She continues to serve as a proud ambassador and spokesperson for CAF, inspiring people of all abilities to embrace movement, community, and possibility.

Whether she’s hiking, speaking at events, or mentoring others, Tara brings her full heart to everything she does.

“CAF didn’t just change my life—it gave me the tools to help others change theirs too,” she says. “That’s the most meaningful part of all of this.”
