Finding Joy in Movement: Brantley Volpel’s Big Adventure

Mariah Wyckoff

A Young Athlete Ready to Explore

For Brantley Volpel, movement is about discovery, joy, and the excitement of trying something new.

Born with spina bifida and raised in Oregon City, Oregon, Brantley navigates the world using a wheelchair. But for him, that wheelchair has never defined who he is or what he is capable of. Instead, it is simply one of the many ways he moves through life — exploring, playing, and discovering the possibilities that sport can offer.

Even at a young age, Brantley brings an infectious curiosity to everything he tries. Like many athletes across the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) community, he approaches life with an open mind and a willingness to step into new experiences.

And for Brantley, every new experience is part of a growing adventure.

Discovering the Power of Sport

Sport has the power to open doors, especially for young athletes with physical disabilities who are beginning to discover what movement can look like for them.

At just six years old when he began exploring sports, Brantley was already eager to participate in as many activities as possible. Rather than hesitating to try something unfamiliar, he embraced each opportunity with excitement.

Over the course of a year, he began experimenting with a variety of sports and activities, always eager to learn, move, and have fun. For Brantley, the joy comes from being involved — from rolling onto a field, joining in an activity, or simply being part of the action.

That enthusiasm is something that inspires everyone around him.

Coaches, family members, and fellow athletes often see in Brantley a reminder of what sport can do: build confidence, create connection, and spark a lifelong love of movement.

Redefining What a Wheelchair Means

One of the most powerful parts of Brantley’s story is how naturally he navigates the world.

For him, using a wheelchair has always been part of life. It isn’t something he had to learn later — it has simply always been how he moves.

In many ways, Brantley ends up teaching others what is possible.

His confidence and comfort show people that a wheelchair is not a barrier. Instead, it is simply a tool that allows him to explore the world, participate in activities, and join in the sports and experiences he enjoys.

That mindset reflects the spirit seen across the CAF athlete community: focusing on what can be done rather than what cannot.

The Importance of Early Opportunity

For young athletes with physical disabilities, access to sport can shape an entire future.

When children are introduced to adaptive sports early in life, they gain far more than physical activity. They gain confidence, independence, friendships, and a sense of belonging within a community that celebrates movement and possibility.

For young athletes like Brantley, those opportunities can spark a lifelong relationship with sport.

Trying one activity can lead to another. Meeting one athlete can inspire a new dream. Experiencing one moment of success can build confidence that lasts a lifetime.

A Community That Moves Together

Stories like Brantley’s highlight something powerful about the CAF community.

When access to sport exists, possibility expands.

Athletes gain the opportunity to move, explore, and challenge themselves. Families find connection with others navigating similar journeys. Communities witness firsthand how sport can create confidence, independence, and joy.

For Brantley, sport isn’t about records or podium finishes.

It’s about the freedom to move.

It’s about fun, friendship, and the excitement of discovering what comes next.

Just Getting Started

Brantley’s athletic journey is only beginning.

At just six years old when he first started exploring sports, he already showed the curiosity, enthusiasm, and open-minded spirit that define so many athletes within the CAF community.

He isn’t afraid to try something new. In fact, he welcomes it.

And that mindset reflects the heart of CAF’s mission: expanding access to sport so every athlete with a physical disability has the opportunity to move, grow, and discover what is possible.

For Brantley, this is just the start of a much bigger adventure.
