Chris Chandler’s story is one of resilience, service, and the relentless pursuit of possibility. Born in Denver and raised in Aurora, Colorado, Chris built his life on discipline and determination from an early age. After graduating from Gateway High School in 1998, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, committing himself to serve his country with honor.
Chris began his military career at the prestigious Marine Barracks at 8th and I in Washington, D.C., serving in the ceremonial platoon for Headquarters Marine Corps before transferring to 2nd Battalion 5th Marine Regiment at Camp Pendleton, California. Following the September 11 attacks, Chris deployed to Afghanistan, where his life changed forever.
On December 16, 2001, while serving in combat, Chris stepped on a landmine, resulting in the loss of the lower portion of his left leg. The devastating injury marked the beginning of an entirely new battle—one that would test his strength far beyond the battlefield.
After emergency treatment in Afghanistan, Germany, and eventually Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Chris faced months of recovery. Despite enduring countless medical evaluations, he remained steadfast in his mission to continue serving. His determination paid off when he returned to active duty and rejoined his infantry unit, deploying three additional times to Iraq as an amputee.
Chris continued breaking barriers, becoming the first amputee from the recent conflicts to earn his jump wings after completing basic airborne school in 2003. His accomplishments stand as a powerful testament to what can be achieved when resilience meets opportunity.
Chris’s journey did not end with military service. Through sport, he found a new arena to challenge himself physically and mentally. Competing in triathlons and marathons, Chris transformed adversity into athletic achievement, proving that injury does not define potential.
CAF Operation Rebound played a critical role in supporting Chris’s athletic pursuits. Designed specifically for injured veterans, service members, and first responders, Operation Rebound provides grants for adaptive sports equipment, travel, training, race entry fees, and lodging. This support creates pathways for athletes like Chris to rebuild confidence, pursue competitive goals, and rediscover purpose through movement.
Operation Rebound is more than a program—it is a lifeline for veterans seeking healing and empowerment through sports. By providing access to opportunities that might otherwise be financially out of reach, CAF helps individuals push beyond limitations and embrace new possibilities.
For Chris, this support has helped fuel a remarkable second chapter defined not by loss, but by perseverance and performance. His journey from wounded warrior to endurance athlete serves as an inspiration to veterans, athletes, and communities everywhere.
