A Celebration of Heart: CAF’s 2021 Virtual Gala Unites Community Through Sport and Resilience

Mariah Wyckoff

On June 17, 2021, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) hosted its annual Celebration of Heart Gala—but this year, the magic happened from home. Streaming live from Purple Patch Performance Center in San Francisco, the virtual event brought together supporters, athletes, and families from across Northern California and beyond, showcasing the power of sport to heal, unite, and transform lives.

Two CAF athletes with physical disabilities and two presenters stand on stage at Celebration of Heart, sharing a lighthearted moment during a live program.

A Virtual Experience Rooted in Connection and Purpose

Hosted by beloved Bay Area sportscasters Laura Britt (SF 49ers) and Therese Viñal (SF Giants), the evening kicked off with an exclusive interactive cocktail and culinary experience led by Eduardo Garcia, the Montana-based “Bionic Chef” and CAF athlete who cooks with a prosthetic arm. Guests were treated to more than recipes—Eduardo’s story of resilience set the tone for a night filled with emotion and inspiration.

As the gala unfolded, viewers were invited into the world of adaptive sports and the athletes who thrive because of it. Through powerful storytelling, surprise moments, and live entertainment, the program uplifted the voices and journeys of individuals whose lives have been changed by CAF.

Real Stories of Courage and Possibility

The 2021 Celebration of Heart Gala highlighted the stories of extraordinary athletes from the Bay Area and beyond. These individuals represent the heart of CAF’s mission—to provide access to sports for anyone with a physical disability, regardless of age, background, or ability.

Carolanne Link – From Sidelines to Center Court

At age 25, Carolanne Link of Oakland, CA is living a dream she never thought possible. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Carolanne grew up watching from the sidelines while her athletic family played sports. That all changed when she discovered wheelchair basketball. For the first time, she felt like an athlete—not a spectator. Now, she’s chasing Paralympic dreams and hopes to compete at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Her story is a testament to the power of inclusion and adaptive sports.

Lucas Cronan – Racing Toward Confidence

At just six years old, Lucas Cronan of Sacramento has energy to spare. Born with fibular hemimelia, he had his leg amputated at age one. But Lucas refuses to be slowed down. With a love for biking, swimming, and running, he often ditches his prosthetic just to go faster. In a heartwarming surprise organized by CAF and Shriners Hospital for Children, Lucas received an Össur running blade, giving him the speed—and confidence—he needs to keep up with friends and chase his dreams.

Honoring a Champion for Community

The evening also paid tribute to Tom Trauger, CFO of Sports Basement, who tragically passed away in a cycling accident. A passionate athlete and advocate, Tom’s legacy was honored by his wife Donna and the community he uplifted. Funds raised during the event support CAF’s programs in his memory—ensuring that future athletes have the chance to thrive.

The Impact of Giving: CAF’s Global Reach

In 2021 alone, CAF awarded $5.1 million in grants, supporting athletes across 49 states, Puerto Rico, and 52 countries. From prosthetics and handcycles to coaching and competition travel, these grants help bridge the financial gap for adaptive athletes—a need often unmet by traditional insurance.

CAF has now raised over $134 million since its founding in 1994, funding more than 35,000 grants. But the impact extends beyond the numbers. Every grant helps unlock confidence, connection, and independence for someone facing physical challenges. And thanks to events like Celebration of Heart, the movement continues to grow.

Music, Mission, and Momentum

As the evening came to a close, CAF athlete and singer Breezy Bochenek took the virtual stage with The Well-Known Strangers, bringing the community together in song. The music, stories, and spirit of the night left viewers with a powerful reminder: sport is not just about competition—it’s about belonging, resilience, and transformation.
