San Diego Jewish Academy and CAF School Program: Empowering Students Through Sport and Inclusion

CAF Staff

At San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA), the annual Jog-a-thon took on a deeper meaning when the school partnered with the CAF school program. What began as a fundraiser quickly grew into an unforgettable lesson in resilience, compassion, and the power of sport to change lives.

Teacher Daniela Marks-Koffler, who helped lead the initiative, explained how meaningful the program became for her students. Through a visit to the CAF headquarters and direct interactions with athletes, students were able to see how inclusion in sport makes a lasting impact.

The connection became even more personal when Paralympic gold medalist Megan Blunk visited the school to share her story. Megan spoke honestly about living with a disability, the importance of positive choices, and how sport gave her confidence and purpose. Her presence on campus, along with her support at the Jog-a-thon, created a memory students will never forget. She not only encouraged them from the sidelines — she ran a lap right alongside them.

Turning Effort Into Action

The students’ motivation was clear: together, they raised $20,000. Their fundraising was enough to purchase a racing wheelchair for a young athlete, who received the equipment during a special presentation following the Jog-a-thon. For SDJA students, seeing the direct result of their efforts — a child gaining access to sport — was a transformative experience.

Marks-Koffler reflected, “Sport is such an important aspect of our students’ lives, so when they saw they could assist others to get active, it was tremendously meaningful for them. CAF made this experience personal, impactful, and unforgettable.”

Lessons That Last a Lifetime

Student reflections showed just how deeply the program resonated:

“Today I learned that our differences are important, anything is possible, and that you should never lose hope in yourself.” – Nadav

“Today I learned that if something bad happens you can get angry, but you can’t go back and change it. You can only go forward and live your life the way it is.” – Ella

“Today I learned that you need to face your fears. When something bad happens you need to make the most of it. We need to see the glass half full, just like Megan.” – Max

“Even though times can be rough, just believing in yourself and trying your best can take you very far in life.” – Joelle

“Dear Megan, I loved trying all of those things. I also loved seeing you. I wish I could have given you a hug and remember always embrace your differences.” – Lev

Another student summarized the heart of the program:
The main idea was to put ourselves in the shoes of people with physical disabilities. These activities let us feel what they feel every day.” – Shira

From perspective-shifting activities to Megan’s example, students walked away with life lessons on empathy, resilience, and celebrating differences.

A Broader Impact Through the CAF School Program

The SDJA Jog-a-thon is one example of how the CAF school program empowers schools to connect lessons of inclusion with real-world action. By pairing classroom learning with fundraising, student-led events, and athlete visits, schools like SDJA create opportunities for young people to experience firsthand how sport can break barriers.

Through their efforts, SDJA students not only supported an athlete’s dream but also discovered that they have the power to make meaningful change in their community.
