2025 Million Dollar Challenge fueled By Toyota

Mariah Wyckoff

The 2025 Million Dollar Challenge fueled by Toyota (MDC) once again brought riders, athletes, and supporters together for one of the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s most meaningful weeks of the year. Beginning in Santa Rosa, the cycling challenge unfolded into an eight-day journey defined by endurance, connection, and purpose, carrying the CAF mission down the California coast and straight into the hearts of everyone involved.

More than 125 cyclists took on the challenge, including 23 athletes with physical disabilities, riding over 600 miles from Northern California to San Diego. Together, this remarkable community raised $1.8 million to fund CAF grants that provide adaptive sports equipment, coaching, training, and competition opportunities for athletes around the world.

More Than Miles

The Million Dollar Challenge has always been about more than the distance covered. It is about what happens when people commit to something bigger than themselves. Throughout the week, riders pushed through early mornings, long climbs, and challenging miles while lifting each other up and forming bonds that extend far beyond the road.

Athletes were at the heart of the experience. Riding alongside supporters, sharing their stories, and celebrating every milestone, they reminded the entire group why MDC exists and how access to sport can open doors to confidence, independence, and belonging.

A Journey Down the California Coast

From redwood forests and vineyard-lined roads to dramatic coastal cliffs, the 2025 route showcased some of California’s most iconic landscapes. Riders weaved through Point Reyes, crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, climbed through Big Sur and Carmel Valley, and took on riding over a century from Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara. Each stretch of road brought new challenges and new opportunities to come together as a team.

Evenings offered time to reflect, share meals, and hear stories from the day. No matter the terrain or weather, the spirit of camaraderie never wavered. Every mile was met with encouragement, determination, and a shared sense of purpose.

The Impact, By the Numbers

Over eight unforgettable days, the 2025 Million Dollar Challenge delivered powerful results. Riders completed more than 600 miles across California, with 17 participants each raising $25,000 or more in support of CAF’s mission. In total, $1,802,600 was raised to fuel grants that help athletes with physical disabilities access the resources they need to move, compete, and thrive through sport.

Mission Moments That Matter

Throughout the week, riders experienced CAF’s mission firsthand through athlete grant presentations and personal stories. One of those moments came from Gavin Sippel, a college student, volunteer, and emerging wheelchair basketball player, balancing school, work, and training while living with a neuromuscular disease. For Gavin, sport is an outlet, a source of confidence, and a pathway to independence. A custom wheelchair basketball chair will allow him to train more effectively and compete at a higher level, turning opportunity into progress.

Stories like Gavin’s underscored the impact of every mile ridden and every dollar raised. They served as powerful reminders that the Million Dollar Challenge fuels real change in the lives of athletes.

A Finish Worth Celebrating

After eight days on the road, riders crossed the finish line at La Jolla Shores in San Diego, welcomed by family, friends, CAF athletes, and staff. The celebration marked more than the end of a ride. It honored the commitment, perseverance, and community that carried the group from start to finish.

Why the Million Dollar Challenge Matters

Every rider who takes on the Million Dollar Challenge fueled by Toyota plays a direct role in expanding access to sport for athletes with physical disabilities. The funds raised support adaptive equipment, coaching, training, and competition opportunities that remove barriers and create possibilities.

As the 2025 MDC comes to a close, its impact continues. The relationships built on the road, the stories shared along the way, and the opportunities created through CAF grants will ripple forward long after the final mile. The Million Dollar Challenge remains one of CAF’s most powerful experiences because it shows what happens when movement, community, and purpose come together.

Together, we move — mile by mile, athlete by athlete.
