Danielle McLaughlin Overcomes Cancer to Become Paratriathlon World Champion and CAF Athlete

Mariah Wyckoff

For Danielle McLaughlin, sport has always been about more than competition—it has been about reclaiming identity, rebuilding purpose, and proving what is possible after life-altering change.

At 16 years old, Danielle’s life shifted dramatically when she was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare cancer that ultimately led to the loss of her foot. A lifelong soccer player and runner, she suddenly found herself separated from the sports that had defined her growing up.

From Loss to Rebuilding Purpose

In the years following her amputation, Danielle experienced a loss of direction and purpose. But through rehabilitation, strength training, and spin classes, she slowly began rebuilding her connection to sport.

During this time, she made a promise to herself: she would complete a triathlon.

That goal became the foundation for everything that followed.

The First Triathlon That Changed Everything

In April 2011, Danielle crossed the finish line of her first triathlon using a standard walking prosthetic and a 30-year-old bike.

It was not about equipment or advantage—it was about completion.

That race marked a turning point. It was the moment she realized she had not lost her competitive identity—she had redefined it.

Rising Into Elite Paratriathlon

Following her first triathlon, Danielle received a running prosthetic through support from the Challenged Athletes Foundation. That access helped unlock a new level of performance.

With continued training, she quickly rose through the ranks:

  • 1st place – 2011 USA Paratriathlon National Championships
  • World Champion – Beijing Paratriathlon

Her success placed her among the top para-triathletes in the world and established her as one of the leading competitors in the sport during that period.

A Life Beyond Elite Competition

While Danielle no longer competes professionally in paratriathlon, she remains deeply connected to sport and the adaptive community.

She continues to stay active across multiple disciplines and embraces any opportunity to try new sports—from running and racing locally to learning golf, a challenge she has fully taken on.

CAF Legacy and Endurance Achievement

Danielle is also part of CAF history. She became the first female adaptive athlete to ride every mile of the 628-mile Million Dollar Challenge, one of the most demanding endurance fundraising rides in adaptive sport.

She also completed the New York City Marathon in 2018, continuing to push her endurance goals well beyond elite competition.

In addition, she remains an active member of the CAF community as a Team CAF softball athlete, bringing her competitive energy into team sport environments.

Professional Life and Leadership

Outside of sport, Danielle serves as the Academic Personnel and Human Resources Manager for the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego.

Her professional career reflects the same discipline and leadership she brings to athletics—balancing high-performance sport with a demanding academic environment.

Looking Ahead

Danielle McLaughlin’s story continues to evolve. From cancer survivor to world champion to endurance athlete and community leader, she remains a powerful example of resilience in motion.

Whether competing, working, or exploring new sports, she continues to embody the CAF mission: that sport has the power to change lives.
