Melba, Idaho, Hosts Challenging 42K Course as Athletes Show Grit, Strength, and Paralympic Potential

The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) wrapped up an unforgettable weekend of adaptive cycling with the U.S. Paralympics Cycling Road Race National Championship and a celebratory awards ceremony. As the third and final day of competition unfolded, elite adaptive athletes battled intense heat, steep climbs, and a demanding 42K course that pushed them to their limits—proving once again that determination knows no boundaries.

This finale capped off a series of four national championship events (time trials, criterium, relay, and road race) designed to give Paralympic hopefuls vital competition experience ahead of Tokyo 2021.

A Challenging Course in Melba, Idaho

Just an hour outside Boise, Melba’s rugged terrain provided the perfect test for the nation’s top adaptive cyclists. The 42-kilometer road race included multiple loops and a punishing 10% grade on the final half-mile climb before the finish line.

With temperatures soaring to 100 degrees, athletes relied on not just physical endurance but also mental toughness to persevere. Volunteers lined the course to provide cooling sprays and support, while CAF staff and Mission43 team members cheered loudly for every rider.

Veteran athletes Ellie Kennedy and Dennis Connors claimed victories in the trike division, showcasing exceptional skill and stamina. The race also highlighted the strength of CAF’s broader cycling community, which continues to grow with each national event.

Road Race Highlights and Livestream Coverage

The competition wasn’t just a test for athletes on the course—it was also a showcase for adaptive sports fans nationwide. Livestream commentator Frankie Andreu guided viewers through the challenging race dynamics, while CAF ambassador Willie Stewart co-hosted, sharing inspiring stories and providing insight into CAF’s mission to support adaptive athletes.

Featured guests included renowned adaptive cyclists Carlos Moleda, Craig Cornwall, Dennis Connors, and CJ Howard, who shared their perspectives on competition, preparation for Tokyo, and the growing visibility of adaptive cycling.

Awards Ceremony at the Boise Zoo

After the intense road race, athletes, families, and supporters gathered at the Boise Zoo for a unique and uplifting National Championships Awards Ceremony. Amidst tropical birds, monkeys, and jaguars, cyclists celebrated their personal victories and national titles in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere.

The awards ceremony recognized podium finishers from both the Crit and Road Race National Championships, highlighting the incredible performances of CAF athletes across the weekend.

Athlete Jamie Whitmore, who claimed titles in the time trial, criterium, and road race, shared her excitement:

“I had a blast at the U.S. Paracycling Nationals in Boise! CAF made it a top-notch event. It reminded me of my pro days on the XTERRA circuit. I’m looking forward to the possibility of more events like this!”

CAF’s Role in Advancing Adaptive Cycling

The road race and awards celebration marked the culmination of an extraordinary weekend where CAF demonstrated its leadership in adaptive cycling. By hosting all four national championship events in one state over three days, CAF minimized travel demands for athletes, allowing them to focus on their performance and build camaraderie within the adaptive cycling community.

These events also served as a crucial stepping stone for athletes preparing for the Tokyo Paralympics, offering real-world competition experience against the nation’s best. CAF continues to break barriers by providing equipment grants, training opportunities, and nationwide clinics, ensuring that every adaptive athlete has access to the resources they need to excel.

Looking Ahead

With the conclusion of the 2021 U.S. Paralympics Cycling Nationals, CAF is already looking forward to future championships and opportunities to further grow adaptive cycling. The success of this weekend’s events highlights the strength of the community, the dedication of athletes, and the bright future of Paralympic sports in the United States.
