Few athletes embody the spirit of possibility quite like Ezra Frech.

At CAF’s 2024 Celebration of Abilities, Ezra was recognized with the Exceptional Athletic Performance Award, an honor celebrating athletes who push the boundaries of athletic achievement through unmatched perseverance, determination, and excellence. For those who have followed his journey over the years, the recognition felt like a full-circle moment.

Long before he became a Paralympic champion, Ezra was part of the CAF community as a young athlete with big dreams and an even bigger belief in what was possible.

Today, he stands as a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, world champion, disability advocate, community leader, and one of the most influential voices in adaptive sport.

A Journey That Started with Belief

Born in Los Angeles with congenital limb differences, Ezra received his first prosthetic leg before his first birthday and grew up approaching sports with the same passion and determination as his peers. From basketball and soccer to baseball and karate, he competed whenever and wherever he could.

His introduction to adaptive sports opened a new world of possibilities and helped shape the athlete he would become. Those early experiences ultimately connected him to CAF, where he was recognized as a Rising Star Award recipient in 2010.

Even at a young age, it was clear that Ezra’s ambitions stretched far beyond the playing field.

Turning Dreams Into Reality

After watching the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Ezra made a bold declaration. He was going to represent Team USA at the next Paralympics.

At the time, he was just 11 years old.

Three years later, he earned a spot on Team USA and competed at his first World Para Athletics Championships. By age 14, he was already competing among the world’s best athletes and establishing himself as one of the brightest young talents in the Paralympic Movement.

His rise continued with a Paralympic debut in Tokyo, where he finished fifth in the high jump and eighth in the long jump. While he narrowly missed the podium, the experience laid the foundation for what was to come.

A Golden Breakthrough in Paris

Everything came together at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Competing in front of packed crowds on the world’s biggest stage, Ezra delivered a career-defining performance, earning gold medals in both the men’s 100-meter T63 and high jump T63 events. He also added a fifth-place finish in the long jump, completing an unforgettable Paralympic campaign.

The accomplishment was years in the making.

From parks and backyard workouts during the pandemic to world championship podiums and Paralympic finals, Ezra’s success reflects a relentless commitment to growth and excellence.

Creating Opportunities for Others

What makes Ezra’s impact even more remarkable is that his influence extends far beyond competition.

Together with his family, he helped establish Angel City Sports, an organization dedicated to providing free adaptive sports opportunities to children, adults, and veterans with disabilities throughout Southern California. The organization has become a powerful force for inclusion and access, helping thousands discover the transformative power of sport.

As a public speaker, advocate, and mentor, Ezra continues to use his platform to challenge perceptions around disability and create more opportunities for future generations.

His commitment to expanding access to sport mirrors CAF’s own mission and reflects the impact that can happen when athletes are empowered to dream bigger.

A Future Full of Possibility

Now a student-athlete at USC, Ezra continues to break barriers as the first above-the-knee amputee recruited to compete in NCAA Division I track and field. He balances collegiate competition, advocacy work, and international competition while helping elevate awareness and visibility for adaptive sport around the world.

As Los Angeles prepares for the 2028 Paralympic Games, Ezra represents more than a medal contender. He represents the future of the movement.

His journey from CAF Rising Star to Paralympic champion serves as a powerful reminder that when talent is matched with opportunity, extraordinary things can happen.
