2024 Celebration of Abilities Award Winners | Honoring Champions in Adaptive Sports

CAF Staff

Every year, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) hosts one of its most anticipated events—the Celebration of Abilities Awards Dinner. This incredible evening is more than a ceremony; it’s a heartfelt tribute to athletes, volunteers, and partners who exemplify CAF’s mission of empowering individuals with physical disabilities through sports.

The 2024 Celebration of Abilities was a night filled with powerful and moving moments, honoring individuals whose dedication, resilience, and leadership have profoundly advanced the world of adaptive athletics. From record-breaking Paralympic performances to pioneering clinical advancements, these honorees inspire change and open doors for generations to come.

Jim MacLaren Award: Dr. Bob Gailey

Dr. Bob Gailey

The Jim MacLaren Award, CAF’s highest annual honor, recognizes unparalleled contributions to advancing its mission. This year, it was awarded to Dr. Bob Gailey, a trailblazing figure whose 30-year commitment to adaptive sports and amputee care has transformed the lives of thousands worldwide.

For over 25 years, Dr. Gailey has pioneered advancements in lower-limb amputee mobility, revolutionizing how patients learn to walk and thrive with prosthetics. He created the One Step Ahead clinics, now a gold standard in rehabilitation, and developed the globally utilized Amputee Mobility Predictor, helping individuals gain access to better prosthetic technology.

Dr. Gailey’s influence extends globally—educating healthcare providers, collaborating with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, and working alongside Össur and CAF to bring mobility clinics to thousands. His relentless dedication has elevated the standard of care and empowered athletes to break barriers in adaptive sports, making him a true embodiment of Jim MacLaren’s legacy.

Exceptional Athletic Performance Award: Ezra Frech & Grace Norman

The Exceptional Athletic Performance Award celebrates athletes who push the boundaries of athletic achievement through unmatched perseverance and skill.

Ezra Frech

Born with congenital limb differences, Ezra had his leg amputated above the knee at age 3. A CAF Rising Star awardee in 2010, Ezra grew into a world-class multisport athlete. With his father, he co-founded Angel City Sports, bringing adaptive sports opportunities to Los Angeles.

Ezra made his Paralympic debut for Team USA in Tokyo 2021, finishing 5th in the high jump. In Paris 2024, he delivered a breakout performance—winning gold medals in both the high jump and 100m sprint. Recruited to USC’s track program, Ezra is not only a collegiate athlete but also a leading voice for disability rights and an emerging figure for the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.

Grace Norman

Grace was born with amniotic band syndrome, resulting in a below-knee amputation. Undeterred, she excelled in cross country, track, and swimming, eventually competing in Para Track and Field and Paratriathlon.

At the 2016 Rio Paralympics, just after graduating high school, Grace made history as the youngest athlete to win a gold medal in triathlon’s inaugural Paralympic event, alongside a bronze medal in the 400m T44 track event. She went on to claim multiple world titles, a silver medal at Tokyo 2020, and most recently dominated with an undefeated 2023–2024 season, capturing another Paralympic gold in Paris.

Together, Ezra and Grace epitomize excellence in adaptive sports, inspiring future athletes to reach beyond perceived limitations.

Trailblazer Award: Michael Andreasen

Michael Andreason

The Trailblazer Award honors athletes who break barriers and pave new pathways for others. This year, Michael Andreasen made history as the first person with dwarfism to complete the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii on October 26, 2024.

Michael’s journey wasn’t easy. Finding a high-performance racing bike tailored to his needs proved challenging. With a CAF grant, he received a custom-designed bike that allowed him, for the first time, proper stand-over height and optimized performance.

“Receiving this bike was a game changer for me,” Michael shares. “Every detail was designed for me, and it’s a gift I’ll treasure for a lifetime.”

Since 2022, Michael has continuously improved his Ironman 70.3 times—from 8:11 in 2022, to 8:03 in 2023, and 7:35 in 2024—culminating in his historic Kona finish. His determination not only shattered records but also opened doors for other athletes with dwarfism to pursue endurance sports at the highest level.

Unstoppable Award: Nicky Nieves

Nikki Nieves at the 2024 paralympics

The Unstoppable Award celebrates athletes who defy adversity and inspire others through sports and mentorship. Nicky Nieves, born with a congenital limb difference affecting her left hand, is a powerful example of resilience and leadership.

Nicky’s volleyball journey began in middle school and flourished in college at Queens College, New York, where she discovered sitting volleyball. Recruited to the USA Volleyball Women’s National Sitting Team, Nicky helped secure the team’s first Paralympic gold medal in Rio 2016.

In 2020, Nicky faced heartbreak—diagnosed with COVID just days before departing for Tokyo, forcing her to miss the Paralympics. Determined to return, she trained relentlessly and made a triumphant comeback in Paris 2024, winning another gold medal and serving as an opening ceremony flagbearer for Team USA.

Beyond competition, Nicky founded Limitless People, a nonprofit dedicated to sharing volleyball and empowering athletes with disabilities across the U.S. and abroad. She’s now pursuing a master’s in clinical mental health, continuing to inspire on and off the court.

Sam Day Rising Star Award: Arelle Middleton

This award recognizes youth athletes demonstrating commitment and focus toward achieving athletic excellence. At just 16 years old, Arelle Middleton has already made history as the youngest member of Team USA to medal at the Paris Paralympics, winning silver in shot put (F64).

Arelle’s journey began with CAF’s San Diego High School Adaptive Sports Program (HSASP) in 2020, which introduced her to track and field. Her rapid progression caught the attention of US Paralympic coaches, propelling her to international competition.

“Without CAF’s High School Track and Field Program, we wouldn’t have known what was possible,” says her mother, Sandra.

Arelle’s success not only highlights her dedication but also showcases the importance of youth programs in nurturing future Paralympic talent.

Volunteer of the Year Award: Jack Burger

CAF thrives on the generosity of volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise to support adaptive sports. The Volunteer of the Year Award was given to Jack Burger, whose contributions have spanned fundraising, operations, and property development.

Since participating in the Million Dollar Challenge cycling event in 2008, Jack has raised over $124,000 for CAF. Beyond fundraising, he’s lent his expertise and resources to major projects like the 2021–2022 Building Refresh and currently serves on CAF’s Property Board, overseeing critical renovations and improvements.

Jack’s leadership and hands-on support have saved costs, secured donations, and ensured successful project execution—an invaluable gift that strengthens CAF’s future.

Celebrating Heroes, Inspiring Futures

The 2024 CAF Celebration of Abilities Awards Dinner honored trailblazers, rising stars, unstoppable athletes, and devoted partners who embody resilience and the transformative power of sports.

Their stories not only highlight personal triumphs but also showcase how CAF’s mission creates lasting change, enabling individuals with physical challenges to live active, empowered lives.

CAF proudly thanks each honoree, volunteer, and supporter for building a future where everyone has the opportunity to be an athlete.
