2023 CAF Celebration of Abilities Award Winners | Honoring Champions in Adaptive Sports

CAF Staff

Every October, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) gathers athletes, partners, and supporters for one of its most meaningful traditions—the Celebration of Abilities Awards Dinner. This inspiring event is more than an awards ceremony; it’s a night where the adaptive sports community comes together to honor individuals who have gone above and beyond to create opportunities for people with physical challenges to pursue active lifestyles.

The CAF Celebration of Abilities shines a spotlight on athletes, volunteers, and partners whose contributions have profoundly impacted the world of adaptive sports. From groundbreaking athletic achievements to decades of advocacy and leadership, these honorees embody CAF’s mission to empower individuals of all abilities through sport.

Below, we proudly introduce the 2023 CAF Celebration of Abilities Award winners, each of whom has played a pivotal role in transforming lives, breaking barriers, and inspiring future generations of challenged athletes.

Jim MacLaren Award: Jeffrey Essakow

The Jim MacLaren Award, CAF’s highest annual honor, recognizes an individual whose contributions to the mission of the Challenged Athletes Foundation are unparalleled. This year, the award was presented to Jeffrey Essakow, whose 30-year journey with CAF has been instrumental in shaping the foundation’s legacy.

As a co-founder of CAF and long-standing Chairman of the Board, Jeffrey has dedicated decades to expanding opportunities for challenged athletes worldwide. Under his visionary leadership, CAF established its global headquarters, grew its endowment to $26 million, and launched iconic fundraising events like the San Diego Triathlon Challenge, Million Dollar Challenge, and Celebration of Will.

Jeffrey’s tireless work has not only raised awareness but also secured essential resources that empower athletes to access adaptive equipment, coaching, and a supportive community. His leadership continues to inspire donors, volunteers, and athletes alike, embodying the spirit of CAF and the legacy of Jim MacLaren.

Partner of the Year: Smoothie King

The Partner of the Year Award recognizes a business partner whose support has made a transformative impact on CAF’s mission. In 2023, Smoothie King earned this distinction for its deep commitment to improving access to adaptive sports.

Guided by CEO Wan Kim, Smoothie King has activated meaningful initiatives that bring inclusion to the forefront of community sports. From wheelchair basketball clinics with the New Orleans Pelicans to youth adaptive football events and collaborations with sports legend Drew Brees, Smoothie King has helped reshape the landscape of adaptive athletics.

Their continued partnership allows CAF to reach thousands of athletes with permanent physical disabilities, ensuring that more children and adults can experience the power of sport, fitness, and independence.

Media Partner of the Year: John Gefrom

Telling the stories of challenged athletes is essential to driving awareness and support for adaptive sports. This year’s Media Partner of the Year, John Gefrom, has been a passionate storyteller for CAF for many years.

Starting as a volunteer videographer at early San Diego Triathlon Challenge events, John dedicated his craft to capturing the resilience, joy, and determination of CAF athletes. Over time, his contributions evolved into high-quality event productions and athlete features that amplify CAF’s message globally.

Through his work, John has not only documented CAF’s impact but also inspired countless individuals to believe in what’s possible when barriers are broken.

Exceptional Athletic Performance Award: Aaron Pike

Exemplifying world-class performance and perseverance, six-time Paralympian Aaron Pike received the Exceptional Athletic Performance Award.

Transitioning from track and field to Para-Nordic skiing, Aaron has continually pushed the limits of his sport. In 2023, he captured Gold and Bronze at the World Championships and celebrated his fifth victory at Grandma’s Marathon Men’s Wheelchair division.

Having received four CAF grants throughout his career, Aaron has become a global symbol of excellence in adaptive sports. His achievements not only set new standards in competition but also motivate young athletes to dream big and pursue elite athletic paths.

Trailblazer Award: Eli Wolff

The Trailblazer Award honors individuals who break barriers and open new pathways for athletes with disabilities. This year, the late Eli Wolff was recognized for his lifetime of advocacy and leadership in building inclusivity in sports.

Eli’s legacy spans decades of impact:

  • US Men’s Cerebral Palsy National Soccer Team representative
  • Founder of the ESPY Award for Best Male and Female Athlete with a Disability (2000)
  • Advocate behind Major League Baseball’s change from “Disabled List” to “Injured Reserve List” (2019)
  • Driving force in establishing the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
  • Key contributor to including sport in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Despite his passing in April, Eli’s vision continues through his wife, Dr. Cheri Blauwet, and through countless initiatives that have made sports more accessible worldwide.

Unstoppable Award: Jeff Waldmuller

The Unstoppable Award celebrates athletes who overcome immense obstacles to achieve greatness in both sports and mentorship. This year’s honoree, Jeff Waldmuller, personifies resilience and determination.

After losing his leg in a motorcycle accident, Jeff transformed his life and career, becoming a prosthetist dedicated to helping other amputees regain mobility. His own athletic journey is equally inspiring: despite setbacks from the pandemic, illness, and injury, Jeff relentlessly pursued his dream of completing the Leadville 100, one of the most grueling endurance races in the world.

Jeff’s positivity and mentorship extend far beyond his personal accomplishments. Through CAF, he has helped fit prosthetic devices for other athletes and continues to champion the belief that nothing is impossible.

Sam Day Rising Star Award: Vivian Elison & Ivan Chaban

This award celebrates young athletes who show extraordinary promise and dedication to achieving athletic goals.

  • Vivian Elison, a spirited 9-year-old with Spina Bifida, has fearlessly embraced Nordic sit skiing, freestyle wrestling, tennis, and mountain bike racing. Competing with the Bogus Basin Nordic Team, Vivian’s achievements and determination inspire both peers and adults to challenge limitations.

  • Ivan Chaban, a 17-year-old from Ukraine, endured a life-changing accident during wartime that resulted in the loss of his leg and his stepfather. Relocating to San Diego, Ivan learned English, began running, and discovered a passion for surfing. With support from Ossur and CAF, Ivan received a running prosthetic, opening the door to high school athletics and dreams of joining the Torrey Pines Surf Team.

Both Vivian and Ivan reflect the resilience, courage, and bright future of young challenged athletes worldwide.

Volunteer of the Year Award: Million Dollar Challenge Ride Leaders

CAF’s events thrive on the dedication of volunteers who support athletes on and off the course. The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to the Million Dollar Challenge (MDC) Ride Leaders, a group of selfless individuals who have led fundraisers and athletes through 20 weeks of training and a 640-mile cycling event.

Over 17 years, their mentorship and guidance have impacted over 900 riders, building a close-knit community that ensures no athlete is left behind. These leaders exemplify CAF’s spirit of teamwork and servant leadership.

Celebrating Champions and Shaping the Future of Adaptive Sports

The 2023 CAF Celebration of Abilities Awards Dinner highlighted the extraordinary individuals and partners who are shaping the future of adaptive sports. From seasoned leaders to rising stars, their contributions remind us that sport has the power to heal, unite, and transform lives.

CAF extends heartfelt gratitude to all honorees, volunteers, and supporters who make it possible for athletes of all abilities to access equipment, mentorship, and opportunities to thrive.
