Confidence at the Helm: CAF-NorCal Adaptive Sailing Clinic Sets Sail

CAF Staff

For the second year in a row, the CAF-NorCal Adaptive Sailing Clinic brought athletes to the water at the Lake Washington Sailing Club (LWSC). Over six weeks of programming, participants discovered the freedom of sailing while gaining confidence, independence, and new skills that will carry them far beyond the shoreline.

Six Weeks on the Water

The clinic was designed to provide a deep, hands-on introduction to the sport of sailing. Split into two sessions of three weeks each, athletes met every Monday and Wednesday for guided instruction aboard a variety of accessible sailboats.

Each participant was paired with a trained sailing partner and learned the fundamentals—from steering to sail handling—while experiencing the unique challenge and joy of navigating open water.

Expert Coaching and Mentorship

Instruction came from the dedicated staff and volunteers at LWSC, including Jim Thweatt, a member of the U.S. Para Sailing Team and a long-time CAF community member. Jim’s journey from downhill skiing to international sailing competition has fueled his passion for making the sport inclusive to all. His guidance gave athletes not only technical skills but also the confidence that they could chart their own path in sailing.

More Than a Clinic: A Pathway to Sport

The impact of the program went well beyond its six-week schedule. Through a three-month membership connected to the clinic, athletes had the chance to keep sailing at the Lake Washington Sailing Club after their sessions ended. Several participants are already planning to continue sailing beyond the summer, taking the first steps toward making the sport a lasting part of their lives. One athlete’s introduction to sailing has even opened the door to competitive opportunities, with Nationals now on the horizon.

Community, Confidence, and Connection

With nine athletes participating across both sessions, the clinic fostered a strong sense of community. Sailors encouraged one another, learned side-by-side, and celebrated each successful tack and turn. The supportive environment—combined with expert coaching—made the water a place of belonging and empowerment.
