When you ask Jim Thweatt what drives him, the answer is simple: the belief that sport is for everyone. A longtime athlete, coach, and physical therapist, Jim has dedicated his life to breaking down barriers in sport and opening opportunities for others. Today, he’s a member of the U.S. Para Sailing Team and a leader in inclusive sailing programs across California—but his story began long before he set foot on a boat.

Jim grew up competing in baseball, judo, track, and other sports. At 17, he lost his lower leg in a motorcycle accident in 1971. Even before he had walked again, a group of combat-wounded veterans from Vietnam took him skiing for the first time. That moment changed his life.
Through the programs that would later become Disabled Sports USA, Jim learned to live by their motto: “If I can do this, I can do anything.” Skiing became his way back into sport, and he eventually rose to the U.S. Disabled Ski Team, competing at the highest levels while also studying to become a physical therapist.
As Jim retired from skiing and waterskiing, he searched for a new outlet. In 2000, while attending the Olympics and Paralympics in Sydney as a spectator, he watched sailing on the harbor jumbotron and thought: “I can do that.”
Already familiar with sailing from his college days in Southern California, Jim soon began competing in both open and adaptive sailing divisions in Northern California. The mix of challenge, independence, and teamwork immediately drew him in. “I love being on the water, the sensation of speed, and the way sailing is never the same thing twice,” Jim explains.
Jim’s work extends beyond his own competition. As a physical therapist, he blends his clinical knowledge with his passion for sport, teaching others to discover what’s possible on the water. He has also served on classification teams, helping establish disability levels for competition across multiple sports including swimming, cycling, track and field, skiing, and sailing.
For Jim, coaching is about more than sport: “Sports like sailing have been a key part of my life—especially as a disabled person—and I want others to have that same opportunity.”

Jim is now helping shape the future of adaptive sailing. Working with the Lake Washington Sailing Club, he is a driving force behind the West Sacramento Inclusive Sailing Foundation, which is building programs to welcome new sailors of all abilities. He is also involved with organizations like the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors, Challenged Sailors San Diego, and California Inclusive Sailing, creating access points across the state.
His vision is clear: sailing should be one of the most inclusive sports in the world. “The boat does not care how many arms you have, if you can see or speak, if you can walk, or where you came from,” he says. “Any barriers are from the people and organizations around them—and I enjoy educating others to become more inclusive.”
As part of the U.S. Para Sailing Team, Jim has competed internationally in the Hansa 303 class, representing the United States at the World Championships in the Netherlands and the Hansa Worlds in Portugal. His focus now is to keep competing while also creating more opportunities for athletes to enter the sport—whether recreationally or competitively.
Jim’s relationship with the Challenged Athletes Foundation goes back decades, to the early days when CAF supported skiers and other athletes with physical disabilities. Today, as part of the CAF-NorCal community, he continues to serve as both a mentor and a recipient of CAF’s support. CAF helps him connect with new athletes, expand inclusive sailing programs, and provide resources for those who might otherwise face financial barriers to participating.
Jim’s story is a reminder of the power of sport to change lives. From his first ski run after limb loss to competing at the world level in sailing, he has proven that barriers can be broken—and that inclusion in sport benefits everyone.
CAF supports athletes like Jim by providing access to equipment, coaching, and inclusive programs across sports. You can play a role in shaping the next chapter of inclusive sailing and beyond by supporting CAF programs, volunteering at clinics, or helping more athletes discover the joy of sport. Together, we can keep charting new courses for athletes of all abilities.
