CAF-Idaho’s Downhill Ski and Snowboard Basecamp Brings Comprehensive Training

Chelsea Day

CAF-Idaho kicked off the 2025-2026 season with an ambitious winter sports experience that went above and beyond typical ski clinic offerings. The CAF-Idaho Downhill Ski/Snowboard Basecamp, held January 15-19 with an immersive follow-up trip February 20-22, brought together eight athletes for a multi-day journey that combined technical skill development, equipment mastery, and the science behind successful mountain navigation.

More Than Just Time on the Mountain

What set this basecamp apart was its holistic approach to winter sports education. Rather than focusing solely on skiing and snowboarding technique, the program created a complete learning ecosystem that addressed every aspect of mountain performance.

Athletes began their days at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse, where yoga and recovery training sessions prepared their bodies for the physical demands ahead. These foundational wellness practices weren’t just warm-ups—they represented a crucial understanding that athletic success starts with proper body maintenance and injury prevention.

The programming then expanded into practical skills that every winter sports enthusiast needs. Gear tuning and waxing workshops demystified equipment care, teaching participants how to maintain their skis and snowboards for optimal performance. Athletes learned firsthand how proper equipment preparation directly impacts their experience on the slopes.

Perhaps most innovative was the introduction to snow science. Understanding snow conditions, weather patterns, and mountain safety transformed participants from passive riders into informed decision-makers who could read terrain and conditions like experienced mountaineers.

Expert Coaching Creates a Supportive Learning Environment

The basecamp brought together an impressive roster of 11 coaches who created an intimate, high-touch learning environment. Coaches Colleen Crowson, Drew Asaro, Patrick Quinn, Wally Lee, Alicia Villalobos, Eric Messenger, Travis Arnoult, Tyson Hasselquist, James Lofthus, Willie Stewart, and Ian Meyer offered personalized guidance that addressed each athlete’s unique goals and abilities.

Working alongside the experienced crews from Boise Adaptive Snowsport Education (BASE) and Higher Ground, these coaches provided real-time feedback that helped athletes refine their technique and build confidence. The small group setting meant that every participant received individual attention, allowing coaches to tailor instruction to specific learning needs and skill levels.

From Bogus Basin to Sun Valley: A Progressive Journey

The basecamp structure followed a thoughtful progression. The January sessions at Bogus Basin and the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse established foundational skills and knowledge in an accessible setting. Athletes built their abilities systematically, mastering basics before advancing to more challenging terrain and conditions.

This preparation set the stage for the February 20-22 immersion trip to Sun Valley, where participants could apply everything they’d learned in one of Idaho’s premier mountain destinations. The immersion format allowed athletes to experience multi-day skiing and snowboarding, building stamina and confidence while putting their newly acquired skills to the test on varied terrain.

Community Partnership Makes Excellence Possible

The success of this comprehensive program relied on strong community partnerships. Boise Adaptive Snowsport Education and Higher Ground brought specialized knowledge in adaptive winter sports instruction, ensuring that teaching methods and equipment adaptations met the specific needs of athletes with physical disabilities.

Bogus Basin provided access to quality terrain and facilities, while Table VIII Catering kept everyone fueled with nourishing meals that supported the demanding physical schedule. These collaborations demonstrated how community organizations working together can create opportunities that no single entity could achieve alone.

The Energy of Shared Progress

The atmosphere throughout the basecamp reflected the excitement of shared learning and mutual support. In the small group setting, athletes celebrated each other’s breakthroughs—whether mastering a new turn technique, successfully waxing equipment for the first time, or understanding how to read avalanche reports.

This energetic, supportive environment transformed technical skill-building into something more meaningful: a community experience where athletes pushed their boundaries while encouraging others to do the same. The bonds formed during early morning yoga sessions and evening gear maintenance workshops created connections that extended beyond the scheduled programming.

Building Confidence Through Knowledge

What participants walked away with extended far beyond improved skiing and snowboarding abilities. They gained a comprehensive understanding of winter mountain sports that empowers independence and safety. Athletes who previously relied on others for equipment maintenance now possessed the knowledge to care for their own gear. Those who might have hesitated about snow conditions now understood how to assess and respond to changing weather.

This confidence comes from knowledge—and knowledge transforms recreational participation into lifelong passion and competence.
