In July 2021, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) partnered with Eagle Mount Bozeman to launch the first-ever adaptive fly fishing and water adventure camp in Montana’s Gallatin County and Big Sky region. This milestone event opened the door for athletes with physical challenges to experience the thrill of fishing Montana’s iconic rivers and enjoying accessible outdoor recreation.

From July 18–21, eight adaptive athletes gathered for this inaugural camp—many trying fly fishing for the first time. The experience began with a warm meet-and-greet dinner catered by Follow Yer Nose BBQ, inspired by Montana outdoor chef and CAF athlete Eduardo Garcia.
With the guidance of CAF staff, seasoned coaches, and local volunteers, participants spent two days fishing the Yellowstone and Gallatin Rivers, supported by professional guides from Gallatin River Guides. CAF Program Lead Wilson Dippo also developed adaptive techniques to support athletes with lower arm and hand limb differences, ensuring everyone could participate fully.
Among the participants was 15-year-old Ridley Brandmayr, introduced to CAF by Eduardo Garcia after losing his hand in an accident at age 11. At camp, Ridley led in total fish caught, showcased his skills in fly tying, and emerged as a young leader in the sport.
Four athletes using wheelchairs, many new to fly fishing, successfully caught fish over the course of the camp and discovered a newfound passion for the sport.
One participant, Drew Asaro, grew up in Idaho and experienced fishing for the first time during the camp. Drew sustained a spinal cord injury while skiing at Big Sky in 2018. After receiving a CAF grant for a mono-ski, he returned to the slopes and now coaches new adaptive athletes with Eagle Mount. The camp offered Drew a special reunion with Sam, the Gallatin River Guide who was with him during his accident, as they shared two days fishing and a third day enjoying adaptive kayaking and paddleboarding at Hyalite Lake.
CAF’s growing collaboration with GRIT Freedom Chair played a crucial role in making the camp accessible. The innovative chair enabled 15-year-old Michael, born with proximal femoral focal deficiency, to join walk/wade fishing activities and fish comfortably alongside his guide.
This camp was also inspired by CAF supporter Michael Blitzer, founder of the CAF Club at Riverdale Country School. His personal passion for fly fishing sparked the idea to make this sport accessible to more individuals with physical challenges.

This first camp was more than an introduction to fishing—it was a catalyst for ongoing opportunities. By developing adaptive techniques and collaborating with local guide services, CAF has laid the foundation for future programs that make Montana’s rivers and outdoor adventures accessible to all.
