“Wonder and curiosity make life beautiful.” — Albert Lin
On Earth Day, we’re reminded of the extraordinary gift that is our planet—the wild, the beautiful, the unknown. For CAF athlete and National Geographic Explorer Albert Lin, that connection to the natural world isn’t just professional—it’s deeply personal.
But in 2016, one moment changed everything.

Albert was at a friend’s house, off-roading in the hills, when a sudden accident left him facing a life-altering reality: the loss of his right leg below the knee. As he lay in a hospital bed, waves of uncertainty hit.
“What would life be like as an amputee?” he wondered. “Would I ever again walk the rim of a volcano, dive through a coral reef, or trek deep into jungle temples?”
His greatest fear wasn’t the injury itself—it was the possibility that his connection to Earth’s wild places, the very thing that shaped his identity, might be lost forever.

But then, the messages started coming in.
People like surfer and shark attack survivor Mike Coots and adaptive adventurer André Szucs reached out. They didn’t offer pity—they offered possibility. They showed Albert that life after limb loss wasn’t a limitation, but a new kind of frontier to explore.
These connections—and the broader community of athletes with physical disabilities—revealed something profound: our limitations are often self-imposed. And through sport, science, and community, we can rewrite the narrative.

Albert’s journey didn’t end with recovery. He battled phantom limb pain and, with the help of neuroscientist friends, used experimental brain-mapping and alternative therapies to “reprogram” his perception of pain and loss. That experience inspired him to found the Center for Human Frontiers at UC San Diego—a place where science and human experience converge to push beyond perceived limits.
Through cutting-edge research and personal exploration, Albert is helping redefine what’s possible for people with disabilities.

Now, a year and a half post-injury, Albert has returned to the wilderness with the same passion and intensity that shaped his earlier career—only now with a prosthetic leg and a renewed sense of gratitude.
From the jungles of Guatemala to the mountains of California, Albert continues his mission. Every climb, every step, every moment outdoors is a celebration—not just of physical ability, but of resilience, community, and the awe-inspiring planet we all share.
“I thought I had lost the wild,” Albert reflects. “But I found it again—through support, innovation, and determination. I’m still exploring. I’m still me.”

On this Earth Day, Albert invites all of us—whether we navigate the world on two legs or with adaptive equipment—to reconnect with the wonder of the world around us.
“This magical blue spaceship we call home is made even more magical when you realize just how lucky we are to walk its beaches, climb its mountains, and swim through its waters,” he says. “Go get out there.”
Albert Lin is a National Geographic Explorer, Research Scientist at UC San Diego, and the Founding Director of the Center for Human Frontiers. He is best known for leading the expedition to find the tomb of Genghis Khan using crowdsourced data and satellite imagery. After an off-roading accident led to the amputation of his right leg, Albert became an athlete, continuing to explore, innovate, and inspire.
