At just three years old, Chase Merriweather’s life changed in an instant. What began as a family trip to Disney World quickly turned into a fight for survival. A rare and aggressive flu strain sent him into septic shock, leading to a brain hemorrhage, emergency surgery, and weeks in a medically induced coma. To save his life, doctors made a decision no family ever expects. The damage to Chase’s body required the amputation of both his arms and both his legs.
What followed could have been defined by limitation. Instead, it became a story of possibility.

In the hospital, Chase’s family waited through uncertainty, not knowing what life would look like if he woke up. But slowly, moments began to return. A smile. A word. A glimpse of the same personality that had always defined him.
That spirit never left.
As Chase recovered, he began learning how to navigate a new reality with prosthetic limbs. Tasks that many take for granted required new methods, new persistence, and constant adaptation. Yet again and again, Chase showed that the question was not whether he could do something, but how he would do it.

Like so many kids, Chase grew up loving sports. And after everything he endured, that passion did not fade.
He returned to the activities he loved, from baseball to track, approaching each one with the same determination that carried him through recovery.
He runs. He competes. He plays.
Not because it is easy, but because it matters.
Chase’s journey reflects something we see across the adaptive sports community every day. Access to sport is not just about competition. It is about identity, belonging, and the freedom to move through the world in your own way.

In a world that often focuses on what is missing, Chase shifts the focus to what is possible.
When others question whether he can do something, he answers by doing it. Whether it is climbing, playing, or simply keeping up with his peers, he continues to prove that ability is not defined by circumstance.
That mindset is what makes his story resonate far beyond his own experience.
Support makes those moments possible.
For athletes like Chase, access to sport is not given. It is built through community, resources, and people who believe in what is possible.

Today, Chase continues to do what he has always done. He shows up. He tries new sports. He proves, day after day, that his abilities are far greater than any assumption placed in front of him. While he has a strong history across various sports, including winning gold at the Para Swimming National Championship in 2024, Chase is all in when it comes to track. He is now officially running at a Paralympic standard time for the 400m sprint. Additionally, he has qualified to compete at the USATF Para Championship in NYC in July of 2026 and may participate in his first Grand Prix in LA in June.
His story is not about overcoming once. It is about continuing.
And it is a reminder that when access meets determination, the outcome is not just participation. It is a transformation.
