In La Jolla, the San Diego Triathlon Challenge has long been a celebration of sport, resilience, and community. Athletes cross the finish line to cheers, families gather on the grass, and the energy of determination fills the air. Behind the scenes of this vibrant event, one man quietly captured it all — not just the athletes’ accomplishments, but their spirit.
That man was Tim Mantoani. Known in professional circles for photographing sports icons and celebrities, Mantoani found a different kind of purpose at the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s annual triathlon. For him, this wasn’t a job. It was a gift.

Tim Mantoani’s approach to photography was rooted in empathy. “What I like about this project is that it’s not perfect,” he once said of his work with CAF. For him, imperfection wasn’t something to hide — it was what revealed humanity’s strength.
Inside a small studio space near La Jolla Cove, he welcomed athletes of all ages and abilities. Some arrived on crutches, others rolled in wheelchairs, others removed prosthetics to rest after hours of racing. Mantoani didn’t see disability. He saw grit, laughter, joy, and pride.
The photographs he created during these weekends were more than portraits. They were affirmations. He told every athlete, from young children to seasoned Paralympians, that their images were powerful — that they embodied the very essence of the event.
As one young athlete explained, “Mr. Tim doesn’t see me as any different than the famous stars he takes pictures of… maybe I’m just as handsome as they are.”

For nearly fifteen years, Mantoani volunteered his time and talent to document the San Diego Triathlon Challenge and other CAF moments. He never sought credit, payment, or even publication. His reward was knowing that each athlete left with the dignity of being seen — not for what they had lost, but for what they had achieved.
In the process, he built an archive of thousands of images that charted the growth of CAF and the athletes who shaped its history. These photographs became part of the visual story of inclusion and resilience, offering the world a new perspective on what sport makes possible.
Mantoani’s work stood apart because he wasn’t just recording performances; he was preserving feelings. His portraits reflected courage, community, and the shared belief that every athlete belongs.

On October 8, 2016, Tim Mantoani lost his battle with cancer after more than a decade of fighting the disease. He was 48. He leaves behind his wife, son, brother, and a legacy that lives on through the countless athletes he photographed and uplifted.
To CAF, his contribution was immeasurable. His photographs continue to remind us why the mission matters: because representation, storytelling, and dignity are as essential as equipment and training.
Mantoani showed that images have the power to change how people see athletes with physical disabilities — not as limited, but as limitless.

The athletes Tim photographed carry his legacy forward every time they line up at the start of a race, cross a finish line, or share their story with others. His lens taught us that visibility matters, and that behind every portrait is a human being with dreams, strength, and a community that believes in them.
Tim Mantoani may have been behind the camera, but his artistry placed the athletes at center stage. For CAF, his images remain a cornerstone of the movement to break barriers through sport.
Tim Mantoani gave CAF a gift that will never fade: a reminder of the power of visibility, empathy, and inclusion. His work showed how storytelling can inspire change and how every person can play a role in making sport accessible.
If you would like to carry forward this legacy, you can join CAF in supporting athletes with physical disabilities. Volunteer your time, share their stories, or create a fundraiser to help provide the equipment and opportunities they need.
Together, we can continue what Tim helped build — a community where every athlete is seen, celebrated, and empowered.
