CAF-Idaho Fly Fishing Clinic 2023: New Anglers, Big Catches, and a Machete Surprise on the Boise River

CAF Staff

With calm waters, vibrant fish, and an unexpected jungle artifact, the first-ever CAF-Idaho Fly Fishing Clinic delivered a weekend full of adventure, laughs, and new experiences. Hosted on the beautiful Boise River, this two-day clinic introduced adaptive athletes to the peaceful and empowering world of fly fishing—and in true CAF fashion, it was anything but ordinary.

A First Cast into the World of Fly Fishing

Under the expert guidance of seasoned pros from Idaho Anglers and CAF athlete mentors Ridley Brandmayr and Wes Atkinson, 11 adaptive participants learned the art of fly fishing from riverbank to raft. From casting technique and knot tying to reading the current and celebrating the catch, each athlete built skills and confidence while enjoying the rhythm of the river.

And yes—nearly everyone caught fish, including rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and mountain whitefish!

An Unexpected Catch of the Day

One of the most memorable (and bizarre) moments of the weekend? Someone reeled in a literal machete from the bottom of the Boise River! While it’s unclear how it got there, the CAF team decided it might just come in handy at a future jungle-themed clinic (because why not?).

A Glimpse Toward the Future

As athletes floated past the site of the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse—a future hub for adaptive sports and community—they reflected on the momentum being built in Idaho. Events like this one aren’t just about catching fish; they’re about catching confidence, connection, and a glimpse of what’s possible with the right support.
