In October 2017, life changed in an instant for Alex Ruiz, a standout high school quarterback from Southern California. During a Friday night football game, he was tackled mid-play, dislocating his knee and severing an artery. The injury cut off blood flow to his leg for more than 11 hours, leaving him with an unthinkable choice: keep his leg and live with severe mobility limitations, or amputate below the knee and open the door to a return to sports with the help of advanced prosthetic technology.
Alex chose amputation—a decision fueled by his determination to stay active and competitive. He knew it would mean months of rehabilitation, learning to walk again, and eventually training for the chance to run.
Shortly after his surgery, Alex connected with Zach Miller, the Chicago Bears tight end who suffered a nearly identical injury just weeks after Alex’s accident. Miller, who also faced the possibility of losing his leg, became a mentor and friend. Their conversations gave Alex encouragement from someone who understood both the physical challenges and the emotional toll of such a life-altering event.
By spring 2018, Alex was making progress with the support of his family, community, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). Then, during a Football ‘N’ America practice in California—a youth co-ed flag football league founded by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees—Alex’s journey took another unexpected turn.
In front of teammates, coaches, and parents, Drew Brees personally surprised Alex with a new running prosthetic, provided in partnership between Football ‘N’ America and CAF. The gift was more than just equipment—it was a symbol of opportunity and a step toward reclaiming the sports he loved.
“I remember looking down and realizing this wasn’t just about running,” Alex later reflected. “It was about getting my life back.”
In February 2019, Alex’s story reached a national audience when ESPN aired a segment narrated by Drew Brees on NFL Countdown during Super Bowl Sunday. The feature captured Alex’s journey from injury to comeback, his relationship with Zach Miller, and the moment he received the prosthetic. It showcased the resilience of a young athlete determined to rewrite his story.
For CAF, Alex’s story represents what is possible when access to sports is restored after a life-changing injury. Through grants for adaptive sports equipment, mentorship, and community programs, CAF works to ensure that athletes with physical disabilities can pursue active lifestyles at any level—from local recreation to elite competition.
“Every grant is about more than equipment,” said a CAF representative. “It’s about restoring independence, building confidence, and giving athletes like Alex the chance to keep pushing forward.”
