CAF-Idaho Winter Sports Weekend 2024: Three Days of Snow, Ice, and Unstoppable Energy

CAF Staff

From the frosty trails of Nordic skiing to the fast-paced energy of sled hockey and the thrill of alpine slopes, the CAF-Idaho Winter Sports Weekend delivered three full days of empowerment, movement, and connection for 51 adaptive athletes.

Hosted in partnership with BASE, Bogus Basin, Mission43, Eagle Mount, and Teton Adaptive, this signature winter event invited new and returning athletes to try something new, hone their skills, and be part of a community that moves together—no matter the weather.

An Inclusive Weekend on Snow and Ice

The event was structured to give each group of 10–15 athletes dedicated time in three unique adaptive winter sports:

  • One day of Downhill Skiing & Snowboarding at Bogus Basin
  • One day of Sled Hockey at Idaho IceWorld
  • One day of Nordic Skiing at Frontier Point Nordic Center

Evenings were spent warming up and winding down with shared dinners at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse, where stories were swapped, friendships strengthened, and laughter echoed louder than the snow machines.

Athlete Highlights

  • Zach Harrell’s family said they appreciated seeing old friends and making new ones.
  • Nelya Schasfoort captured the spirit of the event with just three words: “Best. Day. Ever.”

From joyful firsts to personal breakthroughs, the weekend was full of “I can” moments that won’t soon be forgotten.

Paralympian Power

CAF athletes were supported by an elite team of coaches, including:

  • Josh Sweeney and Lera Doederlein (Nordic Skiing)
  • Andy Yohe (Sled Hockey)
  • Laurie Stephens (Alpine Skiing)

Their expertise and encouragement elevated the experience for everyone, from beginners to advanced athletes ready to level up.
