Adaptive surfing continues to gain international momentum, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is proud to stand at the forefront of its progress. At the 6th Annual Pismo Beach ISA World Para Surfing Championship, CAF granted over $50,000 in travel support to help 39 adaptive surfers from 15 different countries participate in one of the most prestigious events in para surfing. Hosted by AmpSurf and sanctioned by the International Surfing Association (ISA), the championship brings together the top athletes in adaptive surfing, fostering global connection and inclusion.
This year, CAF welcomed new representation from countries like Jamaica and Puerto Rico, marking an exciting expansion of the sport’s international reach. From first-time competitors to seasoned champions, athletes showed what’s possible with the right support—and a whole lot of wave-riding determination.
As a worldwide leader in adaptive sports, CAF’s impact extends far beyond the shoreline. The foundation’s support includes more than just travel grants. Through programs like the CAF Youth Adaptive Surf Program—made possible with support from partners such as the Junior Seau Foundation—CAF helps young and emerging athletes gain access to adaptive equipment, expert coaching, and surf clinics that build skills and confidence.
“We are honored to partner with ISA for the sixth year by funding the travel grants that make it possible for surfers from around the world to compete,” said Nancy Reynolds, Senior Director of Business Development at CAF. “Our Youth Adaptive Surf Program is providing access to a lifestyle sport like surfing for people with physical disabilities at all levels.”
In total this year, CAF has granted nearly $70,000 to 57 adaptive surfers globally to help them reach the waves—whether for competition, training, or gear.

Olivia “Liv” Stone – San Diego, CA
Born with a congenital limb difference, Liv has redefined what’s possible in the sport. Introduced to surfing through Bethany Hamilton and later at CAF’s 3-Day Surf Camp in 2018, Liv moved across the country to pursue her dreams. Today, she is a two-time World Para Surfing Champion, competing with poise, power, and passion.
Sam Bloom – New South Wales, Australia
After a life-altering injury in 2013 left her paralyzed from the chest down, Sam Bloom found her way back to the water—and to herself. Now a two-time world champion in adaptive surfing, Sam’s journey from tragedy to triumph has inspired millions.
Alcina “Pirata” Neto – North Shore, Hawaii
A legend in the adaptive surfing world, Brazil’s “Pirata” lost his leg in a car accident and reimagined his surfing style to match his new body. Now a two-time world champion and a coach to the next generation, Pirata continues to give back through his adaptive surf school and as a mentor at CAF camps.
The ISA World Para Surfing Championship is more than a competition—it’s a step toward global recognition and inclusion. The event builds momentum for adaptive surfing’s future inclusion in the Paralympic Games, something CAF and its partners strongly support through funding, advocacy, and athlete development.
CAF is also working with adaptive board manufacturers and other industry leaders to drive innovation in surf technology, helping athletes push boundaries and performance.
