Braylon O’Neill: Growing Up in Sport Without Limits

Mariah Wyckoff

From the very beginning, Braylon O’Neill has approached life with energy, curiosity, and a drive to move.

Born with a genetic condition that resulted in congenital bilateral tibia and fibula hemimelia, along with differences in his hand, Braylon’s path into sport has looked different from most. But difference has never meant limitation.

Instead, it has been part of a journey defined by determination, adaptability, and a deep love for being active.

Before he even took his first steps, Braylon was already finding ways to move. He learned to crawl at just eight months old and quickly built strength and independence. By the time he received his first prosthetics at 11 months, he was ready to explore the world in new ways.

After undergoing amputation of both legs, Braylon didn’t slow down. If anything, he became even more active.

At home, he moved quickly from one activity to the next, often using his arms to propel himself across the floor, building strength and coordination in his own way. His creativity and energy made it clear early on that sport would play a major role in his life.

A Natural Athlete

Today, Braylon is an extremely active child who thrives in movement. He participates in baseball and soccer, and he also enjoys acrobatics, tennis, and swimming. No matter the sport, his enthusiasm stands out.

He is constantly exploring new ways to challenge himself, building skills while having fun and connecting with others.

Like many athletes with physical disabilities, access to the right equipment and opportunities plays a critical role in that journey. With the right support, Braylon is able to show up fully, not defined by limitations, but by his willingness to try, learn, and grow.

Finding Community Through CAF

In 2012, Braylon and his family connected with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) during the Aquaphor Triathlon in New York City. That moment opened the door to a broader community of athletes, families, and supporters who share a belief in the power of sport.

Through CAF, Braylon has had opportunities to engage with other athletes with physical disabilities, gaining exposure to what is possible and building a sense of belonging within a larger movement.

Shortly after that initial connection, Braylon was awarded a grant to attend the San Diego Triathlon Challenge.

That experience became a meaningful milestone.

Surrounded by athletes of all ages and abilities, Braylon had the opportunity to see firsthand what access to sport can create. The experience was powerful, offering not just participation, but connection, representation, and a vision for the future.

Building What’s Possible

For young athletes like Braylon, sport is about more than competition. It is about confidence, independence, and discovering what is possible over time.

Every practice, every game, and every new experience builds a foundation that will carry forward into every part of life.

With continued support, Braylon will have the opportunity to keep exploring, growing, and defining his own path in sport.

His story reflects something bigger than any one moment. It represents a future where athletes with physical disabilities have the access, support, and community they need to pursue their goals without limits.

Through CAF grants, clinics, and the community, that future continues to take shape every day.
