Challenged Athletes Foundation Developmental Racing Teams: Inspiring Change in Adaptive Cycling

CAF Staff

In 2019, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) formed the Developmental Racing Teams to expand participation and access in adaptive cycling. Since then, these teams have become a driving force in para-cycling, setting competitive benchmarks while breaking down barriers for athletes with physical disabilities.

The Developmental Racing Teams unite seasoned veterans and emerging talents, creating a cohesive, high-performing group that inspires athletes around the world. Today, the teams proudly include:

  • 6 UCI World Champions
  • 12 National Champions
  • 6 Paralympians
  • 6 Paralympic medalists

Elite Athletes Leading the Way

The CAF Women’s Handcycle Team features standout riders such as Alicia Dana—one of the most accomplished athletes in the sport—whose experience and leadership elevate the entire team. Other members include Ryen Reed, Oksana Masters, Jenna Rollman, Gabby Platt, Danielle Watson, and coach Carlos Moleda, each bringing unique strengths and competitive drive.

The CAF Trike Team is led by Jill Walsh, a decorated champion whose mentorship supports fellow riders including Mandy Kloepfer, Ellie Kennedy, Matthew Rodriguez, and coach Steven Peace. Their performances consistently earn podium finishes on both national and international stages.

Impact Beyond Competition

These teams are not just about racing—they’re about community, representation, and mentorship. Athletes frequently participate in CAF’s signature events, including:

  • Riding the final leg of the Million Dollar Challenge presented by Sully Entertainment
  • Leading adaptive cycling clinics during the CAF Community Challenge fueled by Toyota
  • Competing alongside other athletes at the San Diego Triathlon Challenge presented by Dan + Geof

Their visibility and involvement inspire more people to explore adaptive sports, proving that with determination and the right support, athletes with physical disabilities can excel at the highest levels.

The Benefits of Adaptive Bikes

Adaptive bikes—such as handcycles and trikes—offer more than just a way to race. They provide:

  • Physical benefits: Improved cardiovascular health, muscular strength, and overall fitness
  • Independence: Freedom to navigate varied terrains and participate in outdoor activities
  • Social connection: Opportunities to ride in groups, form friendships, and join a supportive community

Types of Adaptive Bikes include:

  • Recreational Handcycle – For casual riding on paved surfaces
  • Off-Road Handcycle – Designed for trails and rugged terrain, with optional electric assist
  • E-Assist Handcycle – Customizable for a wide range of abilities, including advanced shifting and braking systems
  • Tandem Bicycle & Tandem Trike – Allow a sighted cyclist to ride with a visually impaired cyclist, encouraging teamwork
  • Recumbent Delta Trike – Provides back support and accessible controls for comfort and stability

 Supporting the Journey

The CAF Developmental Racing Teams rely on community support to compete nationally and internationally. Donations help fund adaptive equipment, travel, training, and outreach programs—removing barriers for athletes to pursue their goals.

As team manager, Steve Peace often says: “Keep the rubber side down.” The victories, the milestones, and the moments of inspiration all start with a supportive network that believes in the power of sport.
