NBCUniversal Spot Shares Derek Loccident’s Paralympic Journey

CAF Staff

When millions of viewers tune in to Olympic and Paralympic programming this year, they’ll see more than world-class competition. They’ll also meet Derek Loccident, a Paralympic hopeful whose journey has been supported by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).

Thanks to a collaboration between NBCUniversal’s Creative Impact Lab, Venice Arts, and CAF, a new national 30-second PSA is shining a light on Derek’s story and the life-changing impact of access to sports for athletes with physical disabilities.

A Creative Partnership with Purpose

Launched in 2022, NBCUniversal’s Creative Impact Lab pairs apprentices from creative nonprofit agencies with national nonprofits to develop professional-level campaigns. With creative mentorship from NBCUniversal employees, the apprentices bring authentic stories to life, helping nonprofits like CAF expand their reach.

This year, Venice Arts apprentices worked alongside NBCU mentors to craft a moving PSA about Derek. The project not only raised awareness for CAF but also gave young creators real-world experience in storytelling and production. The finished spot debuted on NBC Sports on May 20, 2024, marking 100 days until the Paris Paralympics. It will continue to air across NBCUniversal and Comcast platforms throughout the Olympic window.

Featuring Derek Loccident’s journey to Comcast NBCU audiences is a win-win partnership between CAF, Venice Arts, and NBCUniversal Creative Impact Lab,” said Kara Sterner, CAF’s Chief Marketing Officer. “This collaboration showcases our mission and amplifies visibility, enabling us to scale our impact.”

Derek Loccident: From Football Player to Paralympic Hopeful

Derek’s athletic career began on the football field as a collegiate player. In 2018, a devastating accident severed his left foot, ending his football dreams and forcing him to face an uncertain future.

But with support from CAF and Össur, Derek received a running prosthetic and a CAF sports expense grant to fuel his return to athletics. He discovered a new passion in track & field, where his speed and determination quickly stood out. Today, Derek is training for a spot on Team USA at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

“CAF is an amazing foundation that helps tons of people around the world,” Derek shared. “It’s awesome to be part of a family like this. They allow athletes to compete with confidence, knowing that whatever happens, happens and the rest will take care of itself.”

The Bigger Stage: Paris 2024 Paralympic Coverage

This PSA is airing during NBCUniversal’s most comprehensive U.S. coverage of the Paralympics in history. The Games will feature record-breaking broadcast hours, with groundbreaking coverage designed to give American audiences a closer connection to Paralympic athletes and their stories.

CAF is a leader in supporting athletes with physical disabilities, and we were thrilled to work with Venice Arts to create a powerful PSA that will inspire others like Derek to pursue their dreams,” said Hilary Smith, EVP of Corporate Social Responsibility at NBCUniversal.

Why This Story Matters

Partnerships like this one highlight the ripple effect of collaboration. Apprentices gain valuable creative opportunities. NBCUniversal leverages its platform to elevate voices that deserve to be heard. And CAF athletes like Derek gain visibility that can inspire the next generation of athletes with physical disabilities to pursue sport at any level.

The PSA is more than a spotlight—it’s a reminder that with access, support, and community, anything is possible.

Derek’s journey is one of thousands made possible through CAF’s grants, mentorship, and community programs. With continued support, CAF can ensure that athletes with physical disabilities have the equipment, training, and encouragement they need to thrive.
