The Challenged Athletes Foundation’s Idaho chapter hosted an intensive Mountain Bike Basecamp that gave eight riders the chance to develop their skills, build confidence, and connect with the adaptive mountain biking community. With sessions at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse and an immersive weekend in Sun Valley, this program offered something crucial in adaptive sports: time to dig deep, learn thoroughly, and ride with purpose.

Mountain Bike Basecamp wasn’t a weekend introduction. It was a commitment. Eight adaptive riders signed on for the full program, which ran from April 28 to May 3 at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse, followed by three days in Sun Valley from June 12 to 14. The extended format allowed athletes to progress beyond basics and into the kind of technical riding that makes mountain biking both challenging and rewarding.
The curriculum covered essential bike maintenance, foundational riding techniques, and the skills needed to navigate technical trails with confidence. By limiting the roster to eight participants, CAF-Idaho ensured that each rider received personalized attention from coaches and had ample time to practice, ask questions, and refine their approach to the sport.

Four expert coaches guided the program: CJ Brown, Justin Bickel, Mak Searle, and Jet Turner. Each brought deep experience in mountain biking and a commitment to creating an inclusive environment where athletes with physical disabilities could learn at their own pace.
The coaches focused on building both technical proficiency and confidence. Riders learned how to assess trail features, choose appropriate lines, and adjust their technique for different terrain. They practiced bike handling skills, worked through mechanical issues, and discussed strategies for managing fatigue and pacing on longer rides.
Just as important as the technical instruction was the atmosphere the coaches created. They fostered a sense of community among the riders, encouraging peer learning and celebrating individual progress. For many participants, this combination of expert guidance and supportive camaraderie made the difference between trying a new skill and truly mastering it.
The program’s structure allowed riders to build skills progressively. Initial sessions at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse provided a controlled environment for learning fundamentals and practicing techniques. Athletes could focus on specific skills repeatedly without the pressure of navigating unfamiliar trails each time.

The transition to Sun Valley brought those skills into real-world application. Riders put what they’d learned to the test, experiencing the terrain, elevation changes, and technical features that make Sun Valley a premier destination for mountain biking. The immersion format meant athletes could ride multiple days in succession, building endurance and confidence with each outing.
This progression from Fieldhouse to trails mirrors how mountain biking skills develop naturally. Riders gained competence in a supportive setting before applying those skills in more challenging environments. By the end of the program, participants had a realistic understanding of their capabilities and clear direction for continued growth in the sport.

CAF-Idaho’s Mountain Bike Basecamp relied on partnerships that extended beyond coaching. Ridge to Rivers, Mission43, and 100% contributed to the program’s success, with 100% providing essential gear including sunglasses for all participants. These contributions ensured that athletes had access to proper equipment and could focus on learning without worrying about gear limitations.
The support from these organizations reflects a broader commitment to adaptive mountain biking in Idaho. By investing time and resources in programs like CAF-Idaho’s Basecamp, they help create pathways for athletes with physical disabilities to participate in mountain biking at all levels, from recreational riding to competitive racing.

Mountain Bike Basecamp gave eight riders the tools to continue developing as mountain bikers long after the program ended. They left with technical skills, proper gear, knowledge for maintaining bikes, and connections to the adaptive mountain biking community in Idaho. Perhaps most valuable, they gained confidence in their ability to tackle challenging trails and continue progressing in the sport.
For athletes newer to mountain biking, the program provided a comprehensive introduction. For experienced riders, it offered opportunities to refine technique and push into more technical terrain. All participants benefited from dedicated time with expert coaches and the chance to ride alongside peers who share their passion for the sport.
