CAF Hosts Four National Para-Cycling Championships in Idaho: Full Weekend Recap

Mariah Wyckoff

In July 2021, embracing its competitive spirit and commitment to adaptive sports, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) proudly hosted four major national championship events in Idaho:

  • USA Paralympics Cycling Time Trial
  • USA Paralympics Cycling Criterium (Crit)
  • USA Paralympics Cycling Relay
  • USA Paralympics Cycling Road Race

This three-day series marked the final domestic competition before the Tokyo 2021 Paralympic Games. With all four events held in one state over a single weekend, elite athletes were able to focus on performance rather than travel—resulting in record-breaking times, inspiring stories, and an unforgettable display of athleticism and resilience.

Day 1 – Friday: Time Trial Nationals, Adaptive Cycling Clinic & Surprise Grants

The weekend began in Glenns Ferry with the Time Trial National Championship. The 15K course challenged athletes with dry heat, gusty crosswinds, and tough headwinds. Despite the brutal conditions, CAF athletes delivered phenomenal performances.

Highlights:

  • Will Groulx (Team Bridgestone & CAF athlete) claimed 1st place in the Men’s H2 category with a blistering 26:07 finish.
  • Jamie Whitmore, along with CAF Women’s Handcycling Team members Ellie Kennedy, Lera Doederlein, Ryen Reed, and Alicia Dana, each secured 1st place in their categories.

Adaptive Cycling Clinic Presented by Regence BlueShield

Later that day, CAF hosted an adaptive cycling clinic introducing over 15 athletes to handcycles and other adaptive equipment. For many, it was their first experience riding adaptive bikes, sparking excitement and smiles across the group.

Evening Awards & Surprise Grants

During a private event, two deserving young athletes received CAF grants:

  • Vivian Elison, a 7-year-old born with Spina Bifida, was surprised with her very own handcycle to pursue racing dreams.
  • Abbas Mamoudou, a refugee from the Central African Republic who uses a handcycle after a spinal cord injury, was also gifted a handcycle, allowing him to train and aim for future races.
