The Heart of CAF: Celebrating Our Incredible Volunteers

CAF Staff

Every April, Volunteer Appreciation Month gives us the chance to recognize the people who make CAF’s mission possible. Whether someone has given one afternoon of their time or volunteered for decades, every effort matters. For 30 years, volunteers have been at the heart of our work, helping athletes with physical disabilities access the power of sport.

The Many Hats of a Volunteer

CAF volunteers step into a wide range of roles:

  • Direct service: coaching youth programs, handing out medals at finish lines, or supporting athletes at clinics.
  • Event support: setting up, managing registration, and keeping events running smoothly.
  • Administrative support: answering phones, greeting visitors, and helping staff behind the scenes.
  • Professional expertise: using specialized skills in coaching, healthcare, or communications to strengthen our programs.

Each role extends CAF’s reach, builds community, and helps remove barriers for athletes.

Stories of Dedication: Meet Our Volunteers

This month, we highlight five volunteers whose unique paths and passions reflect the impact of giving back.

Two women celebrate at the finish line of a race. One wears a medal and a blue finisher’s poncho, while the other raises an arm triumphantly with a big smile.

Devon Roeper

A lifelong athlete and professional in healthcare marketing, Devon has combined her career skills with her passion for sport. Growing up around CAF through her father’s involvement in the Million Dollar Challenge, she has been volunteering since childhood. Today, she plays a key role in the Junior Committee in New York and has run the New York Marathon twice with Team CAF.

“The high costs of adaptive equipment shouldn’t hinder anyone from being active. It’s a cause everyone can rally behind.”

Natalie Kim

A gymnast turned photographer, Natalie first connected with CAF at the Celebration of Heart Gala. Inspired by the athletes she met, she began volunteering her skills behind the lens. Through adaptive sports clinics and events, Natalie has captured the resilience and joy of CAF athletes, using her photography to amplify their stories.

“Engaging with the CAF community has been a source of inspiration, filled with impressive conversations and heartwarming connections.”

Lloyd Kristof

Based in Danville, California, Lloyd found his way to CAF through his daughter Eva, who serves as a CAF Programs Manager. A finish carpenter and hockey enthusiast, Lloyd now devotes his time to supporting NorCal clinics. From hauling equipment to cheering at events, he ensures every detail is in place so athletes and families can focus on the experience.

“The atmosphere of CAF clinics is lively and dynamic. Seeing families beam with pride is unforgettable.”

Christine Panagos

A physical therapist with 33 years of experience, Christine started riding with the CAF cycling club four years ago. What began as a way to expand her perspective has become a community she now calls her team. Her stories of shared effort — like pushing teammates uphill and overcoming obstacles together — reflect the spirit of CAF’s volunteer community.

“We are a team, and this cycling group is my community.”

Taylor Zografakis

After attending the CAF NYC Gala in 2019, Taylor felt inspired to create space for young professionals to support the mission. As the founder and Chairman Emeritus of CAF’s Junior Committee, he has helped grow awareness and engagement across New York. He also volunteers at events and clinics, learning directly from the athletes whose stories drive his commitment.

“Meeting athletes and hearing their stories reminds me that with the right support, there are no limits to what can be achieved.”

Looking Ahead

CAF volunteers embody compassion, resilience, and community. Their dedication ensures that athletes with physical disabilities have opportunities to pursue sports and live active lives.

There’s a place for everyone to get involved — whether it’s at an event, in the office, or through sharing professional expertise. Even a few hours can create a lasting impact.
