The crisp October air carried the sound of rushing water as eight anglers gathered along Idaho’s legendary rivers, fly rods in hand and determination in their hearts. For five transformative days, the CAF-Idaho Fly Fishing Basecamp brought together athletes of all abilities to explore the art and science of fly fishing—proving once again that Idaho’s world-class waters welcome everyone.

From October 11-13 at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse and along the Boise River, followed by October 16-17 on the renowned Salmon River, participants immersed themselves in every facet of fly fishing. This wasn’t just a weekend on the water—it was a comprehensive basecamp designed to equip anglers with skills that would last a lifetime.

Under the expert guidance of coaches Ross Dahmer and Nate Lindskoog, athletes dove deep into the fundamentals. Casting techniques were refined through patient, personalized instruction. The delicate art of fly-tying came alive as participants created their own lures, understanding not just the how, but the why behind each material and movement. Entomology and ichthyology sessions revealed the hidden world beneath the surface, teaching anglers to read the river and understand what fish are feeding on at any given moment.

But perhaps most exciting was the opportunity to learn raft rowing—opening up new sections of river and new fishing possibilities that many had never imagined accessing.
What set this basecamp apart was the atmosphere created by Dahmer and Lindskoog, who didn’t just teach fly fishing—they opened the doors to Idaho’s vibrant angling community. Each athlete received personalized attention, with coaches adapting their instruction to meet individual needs and goals. Whether someone was picking up a fly rod for the first time or looking to refine years of experience, the coaching was tailored to help them succeed.

The hands-on approach meant every participant gained practical experience with local fish species, understanding their behavior, habitat, and the best techniques for pursuing them. The focus was on creating competent, confident anglers who could continue exploring Idaho’s waters long after the clinic ended.
Kevin Rhinehart captured the spirit of the event perfectly in his enthusiastic Facebook post: “Grand slam home run! I met new friends and got to brush up my fly fishing technique. And I learned to tie flies on to my leader one handed (practice needed). Special thanks to Wilson and Fenna!”

His words highlight what made this basecamp special—it wasn’t just about individual achievement, but about the friendships forged, the community built, and the mutual support that defines the spirit of fly fishing.
Idaho’s reputation as a fly fishing destination is well-earned, and participants experienced firsthand why anglers travel from around the world to cast their lines in these waters. The Boise River, winding through the heart of the city yet teeming with trout, provided an accessible yet challenging venue for honing skills. The Salmon River, known for its pristine beauty and abundant fishery, offered the kind of wilderness fishing experience that creates lifelong memories.

Fishing these premier rivers wasn’t just about catching fish—though there were plenty of strikes and successful hooksets to celebrate. It was about learning to read water, understanding river ecosystems, and developing the confidence to tackle new fishing challenges independently.
The success of CAF-Idaho’s Fly Fishing Basecamp was made possible through the generous support of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation, whose commitment to life-changing programs continues to open doors for athletes across Idaho.

Critical partnerships with Idaho Anglers, Idaho Fish and Game, and Cascade Raft and Kayak ensured participants had access to top-tier instruction, quality equipment, and the local knowledge that can only come from organizations deeply rooted in Idaho’s fishing community. These collaborations exemplify how building inclusive outdoor recreation requires the whole community working together.
As the basecamp concluded and participants headed home with new skills, new friends, and new confidence, the impact extended far beyond those five days on the water. Armed with knowledge of entomology, refined casting techniques, and an understanding of raft rowing, these eight anglers now have the tools to explore countless miles of Idaho’s rivers independently.
They’ve become part of a community that values conservation, respects the resource, and welcomes all who approach the river with curiosity and care. They’ve discovered that fly fishing is as much about observation and patience as it is about technique—lessons that resonate far beyond the riverbank.
