Chele Teabout’s Transformation Through Triathlon

Mariah Wyckoff

Chele Teabout’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, transformation, and the life-changing impact of sport. Hailing from Watervliet, New York, Chele once served her community as a corrections officer for the Albany County Sheriff’s Department. Her path, however, changed dramatically after a devastating workplace accident in 1997.

Chele was struck by a 500+ pound food cart, an incident that caused severe nerve damage and launched her into years of chronic pain. Over time, she underwent 29 surgeries in an attempt to repair the damage and restore her quality of life. Despite these repeated efforts, none provided relief.

Living in constant pain became an overwhelming reality, ultimately leading doctors to make the difficult decision to amputate her leg in hopes of ending her suffering. While the surgery marked the end of one battle, it also began another. Adjusting to life as an amputee presented physical, emotional, and mental challenges that left Chele struggling deeply.

Finding Strength Through Sport

Following her amputation, Chele faced severe depression and significant personal obstacles. But her introduction to Challenged Athletes Foundation became the turning point that helped reshape her future.

With CAF’s support, Chele began rebuilding not only her physical health but also her sense of purpose. Through adaptive sports and the power of community, she transformed her life in extraordinary ways. She lost more than 170 pounds, rediscovered her strength, and embraced a new identity as an athlete.

Triathlon became her platform for healing, empowerment, and personal growth. Today, Chele has completed 11 triathlons, each one representing far more than a finish line—it symbolizes perseverance over pain, resilience over adversity, and possibility over limitation.

The Impact of Challenged Athletes Foundation

CAF played a pivotal role in Chele’s transformation by providing access to adaptive sports opportunities, resources, and a supportive network that encouraged her to push beyond what once seemed impossible.

Through CAF, Chele found more than equipment or race opportunities—she found confidence, connection, and a renewed commitment to helping others. Her journey highlights how sport can become a catalyst for healing and life transformation for individuals facing physical challenges.

Becoming a Hero of Sport

Chele’s remarkable story has earned recognition as a CAF Hero of Sport, and her continued dedication serves as an inspiration to athletes and communities everywhere. She demonstrates that while life can change in an instant, determination and support can create a future even stronger than before.

Her journey reminds us that physical setbacks do not define a person’s potential. Through grit, support, and the opportunity to move, extraordinary achievements become possible.
