CAF NorCal partnered with UCSF and Movement San Francisco to host an adaptive climbing clinic that welcomed athletes of all experience levels to the wall. Held at Movement Gym in San Francisco, the clinic created a supportive, skill-building environment where athletes with physical disabilities could try climbing for the first time or continue developing their technique alongside an encouraging community.
This clinic was made possible through a collaboration between Challenged Athletes Foundation, UCSF, and Movement San Francisco, with leadership from adaptive climber Joshua Unterman, who represented UCSF. Joshua’s experience as an adaptive athlete helped shape a clinic that balanced technical instruction with approachability, making the sport accessible for everyone in attendance.
CAF would also like to recognize Nicole Henry-Wild (UCSF) and Jason Wisser (Movement San Francisco) for their leadership and commitment to expanding access to adaptive sports.
The clinic welcomed 21 athletes with physical disabilities, ranging in age and experience. The youngest participant was just four years old, highlighting how early access to sport can spark confidence, curiosity, and joy. Athletes were introduced to climbing fundamentals such as harness use, belay systems, and movement techniques, while more experienced climbers focused on refining skills and building confidence on the wall.
A team of 26 dedicated volunteers supported the clinic, allowing for a 1:1 or 2:1 volunteer-to-athlete ratio to ensure safety, personalized instruction, and encouragement. More than half of the volunteers were healthcare professionals, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, doctors, and nurses, reinforcing the clinic’s focus on both performance and well-being.
Adaptive climbing clinics like this one are about more than learning a new sport. They create space for connection, confidence, and community. Whether athletes were climbing for the first time or building on years of experience, the clinic demonstrated how intentional partnerships and volunteer support can break down barriers and open doors to lifelong participation in sport.
CAF is proud to continue expanding adaptive sport opportunities across Northern California and beyond, ensuring athletes with physical disabilities have access to the resources, equipment, and community they need to thrive.
