2024 CAF Community Weekend Fueled by Toyota Raises $2.3M to Empower Adaptive Athletes

CAF Staff

The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) proudly concluded its 2024 CAF Community Weekend fueled by Toyota, marking another unforgettable celebration of resilience, inclusion, and the transformative power of sports. Over $2.3 million was raised, directly supporting athletes with physical disabilities worldwide.

Hosted in Mission Bay, San Diego, this highly anticipated annual weekend united more than 200 adaptive athletes and over 600 able-bodied participants, demonstrating how sport bridges barriers and builds an unbreakable community.

Friday: Adaptive Clinics and Celebration of Abilities

The weekend launched on Friday, November 1, with an Adaptive Surf Clinic fueled by San Diego County Toyota Dealers and an Open Water Swim Clinic. Athletes of all abilities gathered to challenge themselves, share stories, and build connections.

That evening, CAF hosted its prestigious Celebration of Abilities Awards, recognizing trailblazing athletes, partners, and volunteers for their extraordinary contributions to adaptive sports. These honorees exemplified courage, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to empowering others.

Saturday: Metric Century Ride and Adaptive Clinics

Saturday featured the thrilling Metric Century Ride, alongside a full day of adaptive sports clinics designed to open doors to new possibilities. Participants engaged in:

  • Össur and CAF Running and Mobility Clinic – helping amputees and mobility-challenged athletes refine their skills.
  • Handcycling and Pickleball sessions – fostering camaraderie and confidence.
  • Adaptive swimming instruction – led by elite coaches and Paralympians.

One of the weekend’s most heartwarming moments came when nine-year-old Estella Madrigal, a cancer survivor from Chula Vista, received a brand-new Össur prosthetic running leg. With her new prosthetic, Estella joyfully ran alongside athletes and coaches—an unforgettable reminder of CAF’s mission to create access to sports for all.

Throughout the day, CAF grants were awarded, giving athletes crucial support for adaptive equipment, coaching, and mentorship.

Sunday: “The Best Day in Tri” – San Diego Triathlon Challenge

Sunday’s signature event, the San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC), once again earned its title as “the best day in tri.” Sports legends, celebrities, and professional athletes joined hundreds of participants for:

  • A one-mile calm bay swim
  • A 12.4-mile scenic bike ride
  • A 3.1-mile community run through Mission Bay

Other Sunday highlights included:

  • Tour de Cove presented by EoS Fitness – a high-energy stationary cyclethon raising $110,000
  • 5K Walk + Roll presented by Nike – uniting walkers, wheelchair users, and runners
  • Jami Marseilles Kids Run & Roll presented by Philadelphia Insurance Companies – empowering young adaptive athletes to race with confidence and joy

From the cheering crowds to heartfelt finish-line moments, the day underscored that sport has no limits when inclusion and support come first.

Toyota’s Commitment to Mobility and Inclusion

As title sponsor, Toyota played a crucial role in delivering a world-class, inclusive experience. Their contributions included:

  • Toyota Sports Festival – featuring wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, pickleball, and sled hockey.
  • Toyota Athlete Lounge – connecting fans with Team Toyota Paralympic athletes.
  • Fully adapted Toyota vans – ensuring every athlete arrived safely and comfortably at each venue.

Toyota’s ongoing partnership aligns perfectly with CAF’s mission to expand mobility solutions and break barriers for athletes with physical disabilities.

Impact Beyond the Weekend

Funds raised from the 2024 CAF Community Weekend will:

  • Provide adaptive sports equipment to athletes worldwide
  • Support training programs and mentorship for individuals at all levels of sport
  • Fuel new opportunities for athletes to pursue active, independent lifestyles

“Our CAF Community Weekend has become a powerful tradition filled with energy, resilience, and a spirit of togetherness. This event is a celebration of possibilities, breaking barriers, and proving that no challenge is too great when we come together in support of one another.” Bob Babbitt, CAF Co-Founder
