May 31, 2014, started like any other race morning for Glenn Hartrick—pre-dawn alarms, triple-checking gear, and that familiar nervous excitement. A seasoned triathlete with over 175 races under his belt, Glenn was chasing the thrill of pushing his limits. “Racing and competition was an addiction I couldn’t shake,” he said.
It was a sprint triathlon he had won the year before. But even champions forget things—this time, his cycling shoes were still in the car. He raced the bike leg without them, laughing it off as a “rookie mistake.” He had no idea this would be the final race of his able-bodied career.
Less than two weeks later, on June 12, 2014, Glenn was 34 miles into a routine training ride when a driver made an illegal U-turn and struck him. In an instant, Glenn was paralyzed from the chest down.
Just weeks earlier, he had been in the best shape of his life, fresh off a Runner’s World magazine cover and gearing up for his sixth IRONMAN. Now, he was in a hospital bed, trying to make sense of what had happened and what was next.

Three months into rehab, Glenn took his first spin around the hospital parking lot in a handcycle from the outpatient unit. Logging just a few miles on Strava, it may have looked like a small ride—but for Glenn, it meant everything. “That was kind of the beginning for me,” he shared. “It allowed me to physically build the strength to become self-sufficient, and it let me tell the multi-sport community, ‘I’m going to get through this.’”
His first real connection with a new athletic future came when he heard about the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). “I applied for a grant before I even tried handcycling,” he said. “I just knew it was for me.” He received his CAF-funded handcycle in early 2015 and wasted no time. His first post-injury goal? Complete the Rutgers Half Marathon—just 10 months after the accident. Mission accomplished.

What followed was a remarkable athletic resurgence. Glenn became the first person to complete the New York City Marathon as a runner, handcyclist, and racing chair athlete. He won the Philadelphia and New Jersey marathons, placed in the LA and Philly marathons, and went on to race in over 250 triathlons and endurance events post-injury.
Exactly two years after his accident, Glenn returned to IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman—this time swimming 1.2 miles, handcycling 56 miles, and finishing 13.1 miles in a racing chair, all with CAF equipment. The return was deeply symbolic: same course, new perspective, even greater strength.
He would later take on his biggest challenge yet: IRONMAN Florida. A full 140.6 miles of swim-bike-run as a para-triathlete. “It’s hard to believe IRONMAN Florida is almost here,” he said at the time. “CAF, the multi-sport world, friends, and family have helped get me back to the starting line doing what I love. For that, I am forever grateful.”
To prepare, Glenn trained relentlessly. From freezing rain at the Whistler Gran Fondo to intense swim sessions and hill climbs, he pushed harder than ever before. “We must live life through the windshield, not the rearview mirror,” Glenn often says.

Glenn’s journey is one of unwavering determination and a refusal to let anything—not even paralysis—slow him down. He credits much of his success to the support of his community, family, and CAF. “CAF believed in me from the start,” Glenn shared. “Their support allowed me to focus on building a new life and embracing my new normal.”
As he continues to set goals and race across the country, Glenn is raising funds to help others do the same. His $70,300 fundraising goal—representing $1,000 per mile of a 70.3 IRONMAN—is helping CAF provide adaptive equipment, training, and competition grants to athletes with physical challenges.

Want to help more athletes like Glenn?
Glenn once set a goal to raise $70,300—$1,000 for every mile of a 70.3 triathlon—to support other challenged athletes through CAF. Every donation funds adaptive equipment, training, and competition grants that empower people with physical disabilities to pursue active lifestyles.
