Saturday morning at La Jolla Shores brought together athletes, families, volunteers, and staff for a meaningful Adaptive Surf Clinic that highlighted what access to sport can create.
CAF’s Adaptive Surf Clinics are designed to introduce athletes with physical disabilities to surfing in a safe, welcoming environment. With the support of trained volunteers and adaptive equipment, athletes are able to explore surf in a way that meets them where they are, whether that means riding a wave from a prone position, kneeling, or simply getting comfortable in the water. For many participants, these clinics are not about performance, but about discovery, trust, and the freedom that comes from being in the ocean.
Families gathered along the shoreline, volunteers worked closely with athletes in the water, and encouragement carried across the beach with every wave caught. For some athletes, it was their first time surfing in the ocean. For others, it was a chance to build on skills they had been developing over time.

One of the standout moments of the clinic came from Micaiah, who arrived with her dad and immediately embraced the experience. Throughout the session, she worked closely with volunteers as she built confidence in the water. When she successfully got up onto her knees while riding a wave, her pride was unmistakable. Micaiah and her dad shared a moment that reflected more than a surfing milestone. It marked a boost in confidence and a reminder of what becomes possible when athletes are supported in environments designed for success.

Another meaningful highlight came from Jacob, a single-leg amputee who became an amputee earlier this year. Saturday’s clinic marked his first time surfing in the ocean. Stepping into the water with determination, Jacob pushed himself throughout the session, stayed positive, and embraced each opportunity to learn. Navigating the waves for the first time required patience, trust, and effort, and Jacob met each challenge head-on.
Beyond the water, the morning at La Jolla Shores was defined by community. Volunteers played a critical role, working one-on-one with athletes, offering encouragement, and helping create a supportive atmosphere where everyone felt welcome. These shared experiences are what make regional clinics so impactful; they strengthen local connections while expanding access to sport.

As the morning wrapped up and boards were carried back to the sand, the sense of accomplishment lingered. From first rides to confidence-building breakthroughs, the clinic served as a reminder that movement takes many forms and that when communities come together, the impact extends far beyond the water.
