30 Years of Empowering Lives Through Sport

CAF Staff

The year 2023 marked a milestone: 30 years since the founding of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). What began as a response to one man’s story has grown into a global movement, breaking barriers and creating opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities to thrive in sport and in life.

A Legacy Born from Compassion

CAF’s story began in 1994 with Jim MacLaren, a world-class athlete whose life was transformed after an accident training for a triathlon left him quadriplegic. Determined to support Jim, Jeffrey Essakow, Bob Babbitt, and Rick Kozlowski organized a fundraiser. What started as one event revealed a much larger need: financial barriers were keeping people with physical disabilities from accessing the equipment, training, and opportunities needed to be active.

From that beginning, CAF was born. Thirty years later, the organization has raised over $159 million, fulfilled 44,000 funding requests, and impacted another 60,000 individuals annually through outreach programs in all 50 states and more than 70 countries.

As CAF Co-founder and Chairman of the Board Jeffrey Essakow shared:

CAF’s 30th anniversary marks not just a celebration of our past accomplishments, but a declaration of our commitment to a future where every athlete can thrive. As we prepare for our 30th grant application season and our CAF Community Challenge Weekend, we celebrate both the legacy of the past and the promise of what lies ahead.”

CAF Grant Program

At the heart of CAF’s mission is the Grant Program, which opened its 30th application cycle in September 2023. The program provides funding for adaptive sports equipment, prosthetics, coaching, training, and competition travel expenses. Each grant helps remove barriers and gives athletes the chance to pursue an active lifestyle on their own terms.

Over the decades, thousands of athletes have received the tools they need — from racing wheelchairs and handcycles to running prosthetics — allowing them to not only participate, but to excel in sports at every level.

CAF Community Challenge Weekend

The celebration of sport and community continues each October in San Diego at the CAF Community Challenge Weekend. From October 20–22, 2023, Mission Bay came alive with clinics, races, and activities designed to unite athletes of all abilities.

Friday and Saturday featured adaptive sports clinics, while Sunday was the centerpiece: the San Diego Triathlon Challenge presented by Dan + Geof, alongside the Toyota Sports Festival, the EōS Fitness Tour de Cove stationary cyclethon, the Nike 5K Walk, Run, and Roll, and the Jami Marseilles Kids Run and Roll. With more than 800 participants and countless supporters, the weekend highlighted the joy of inclusion and the power of sport to bring communities together.

Looking Ahead

CAF’s 30th anniversary was not only a time to reflect on three decades of progress but also a reminder of the work still to come. By providing opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities to lead active, fulfilling lives, CAF continues to shape a future defined by resilience, acceptance, and community.

The next chapter promises to build on this foundation — removing barriers, amplifying voices, and ensuring that every athlete has the chance to discover the transformative power of sport.
