Robin Williams’ relationship with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) began in the late 1990s and forever changed the San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC). In 1997, he joined a relay team at the Malibu Triathlon—the first A-list celebrity to step into the sport. A year later, he arrived at La Jolla Cove for SDTC, then a volunteer-run event with only 250 athletes.
Instead of staying behind the scenes, Robin dove in. He learned names, listened to stories, and improvised with crowds. For the athletes, it felt like family. As staff member Tabi King remembered, Robin often said: “This is like coming home to family.” His presence elevated SDTC overnight while keeping the focus on inclusion and connection.

At SDTC, Robin became the cyclist on Team Braveheart, alongside double above-knee amputee Rudy Garcia-Tolson (swim) and two-time IRONMAN World Champion Scott Tinley (run). They competed together for eleven consecutive years.
Robin always deferred the spotlight, joking about Rudy: “All Rudy cares about is that I’m his video game pimp.”
One highlight came when Rudy was honored with the Casey Martin Award at Nike headquarters. Robin flew overnight from New York to present it, telling the audience: “Rudy is an amazing athlete. To me, a challenged athlete is a 300-pound person trying to squeeze into a pair of bike shorts.”
That mix of humor and respect defined Robin’s role: he used his influence to shift perceptions, showing athletes with physical disabilities as powerful, capable, and inspiring.

Robin understood that his presence drew media to SDTC. He embraced it—knowing reporters came for him but would leave talking about CAF athletes.
When asked how he’d feel after the 56-mile ride, he quipped: “Like Niagara Falls running down the crack of my ass. Oh…is this live?” It was classic Robin—humor used to amplify awareness.
Behind the scenes, he was equally genuine. Tabi King recalls that Robin never wanted CAF to promote his appearance; he just wanted to be present. He remembered athletes year after year, giving them his full attention. Each time she thanked him, Robin replied: “No, it is I who thank you. It means more to me than it does to them.”
His loyalty drew in other celebrities too. In 2003, he encouraged Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, and David James Elliot to join SDTC—adding visibility while keeping the heart of the event on the athletes.

Scott Tinley remembers Robin’s bond with kids at SDTC: “When he was hanging with the kids, you dare not interrupt.” Like his roles in Mrs. Doubtfire and Patch Adams, Robin’s compassion shone brightest with children, affirming that the real work is “improving the quality of life, not just delaying death.”
After his passing, CAF launched the Robin Williams Endowment Fund in 2015. The $1 million raised at the Celebration of Will gala—matched by an anonymous donor—created a $2 million fund that now provides annual grants in perpetuity for athletes with physical disabilities.
As Tinley put it, Robin was a friend of CAF because he believed in “that big hand offering to make things a little better for the imperfect.” His legacy endures—in laughter, in access, and in the community he helped build.
