Serving Up Possibility: Highlights from the Adaptive Tennis Clinic in Maryland

CAF Staff

On a sunny Saturday morning in Potomac, Maryland, the courts at Churchill High School came alive with the sound of bouncing tennis balls, laughter, and determination. Athletes of all ages and abilities gathered on June 21 for the Adaptive Tennis Clinic, hosted by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) in partnership with the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) of College Park, Maryland.

Two athletes participate in an adaptive tennis drill on an outdoor court, with a coach demonstrating ball control beside a wheelchair tennis athlete.

An Inclusive Day of Tennis

The clinic opened its doors to anyone interested in the game—whether trying tennis for the first time or refining skills as a seasoned player. Athletes with physical disabilities had the chance to experience both Para Standing Tennis and Wheelchair Tennis, guided by experienced coaches who tailored instruction to each individual’s abilities and goals.

Thanks to CAF and JTCC, all equipment was provided, including sport wheelchairs and tennis rackets, ensuring every participant could focus on play and fun without barriers.

Coaching and Community

Coaches from JTCC worked one-on-one and in small groups, helping athletes build confidence with forehands, serves, and volleys. For some, it was the excitement of hitting their first successful rally. For others, it was about testing advanced strokes and tactical play.

The clinic wasn’t just about skill—it was about community. On the courts, athletes encouraged one another, swapping high-fives and celebrating each milestone. Parents, volunteers, and supporters filled the sidelines, creating an atmosphere of energy and belonging.

Breaking Down Barriers in Sport

Events like this clinic represent CAF’s vision of breaking barriers and expanding access to sport. By working with partners like JTCC and supporters like Morgan Stanley, CAF ensures that opportunities in tennis are not limited by equipment costs, access to coaching, or lack of exposure.

As one participant shared, the experience was about more than learning a sport: “Being here shows me what I can do—and that there’s a whole community behind me.”

Looking Ahead

The success of this Maryland tennis clinic shows what’s possible when collaboration, coaching, and community come together. Each athlete left with new skills, but more importantly, with the joy of knowing they belong in sport.
